Post subject: Michalek / Michaelet / Michalick
I am researching my paternal 3x great grandparents, who emigrated to New Zealand from Prussia on board the "Terpsichore" which departed Hamburg in November 1875.
They were Anton Michalek (also spelt Michaelet or Michalick) and Marianne Schramka (daughter of Peter and Pauline).
I have unfortunately hit brick walls attempting to find anything about them further back than their immigration/shipping records - so would appreciate any assistance.
Thanks
Catherine

Hi Catherine,
I have a copy of the 'bushmen' photo featuring Anton Michalek, my great-grandfather Iskirka and others, from the Palmerston North archives.
Like you, I'm having a lot of trouble finding any trace of my g-grandfather's life before he emigrated to New Zealand.
There is reference to the Michaleks/Michalicks in a New Zealand website called Papers Past, an online collection of old newspapers from around the country.
You can Google it.
These newspapers are being digitised as time goes by to cover more recent time periods -- at the moment they go from the 1870s to about 1912 mostly, with NZ Truth up to 1930 and the Evening Post (printed in Wellington) up to 1945. You can key in a name and see every news item related to that name. From the little bit that I looked up, it seemed that Marianne became known as Mary. Anton & his wife not only lost two of their very young children, but also their adult son Leonard, a sawmill worker who was killed by a falling tree. The accident is referred to in the New Zealand Herald of June 27, 1912, page 8.
In another reference I saw, Anton is said to be from "Bohemia." That might be a clue as to where he was from. I believe that today, Bohemia is part of the Czech Republic.

Thanks Tina
I have picked up a number of items from Papers Past, including a second son who was also killed in a milling accident, and another selling liquor illegally!
Thanks for the tip about Bohemia - we've always believed Anton to be Polish (although his NZ naturalisation record says he was from Germany), so I've been looking for Polish, German or Prussian origin. Will spread the net wider and see if that helps.

Hi Catherine,
My g-grandfather is also listed as German on his NZ naturalisation record, but I always thought that was just because he was from the Prussian, German-speaking portion of Poland. It seems that Anton, like my g-grandfather, never listed his town of origin on his naturalisation record.

Hi Catherine,
some records are not corect because of difficulties with Czech pronunciation and special diacritics. The names above sound Czech.
I would say it could be "Antonín Michálek" or "Antonín Michalík" and "Marie Šrámková" or "Mariana Šrámková".
