Can someone clarify the christian name of Mr Baranski, it looks like it might be Vladyslaw but the first letter doesn't look like V to me. J̌ Also there's a name of a 3rd(?) witness in block capitals, it looks like OZIEMBLOWSKI or OLIEMBLOWSKI. Is that an initial plus a surname?

Hi Stewart,

The first name you are asking about is Wladyslaw, in Polish you would see it as Władysław. The second is Oziemblowski. Oziembłowski is a properly spelled Polish surname.

Best regards,
Sophia

Thanks Sophia. Can you think why it would just be written as Oziemblowski ie with no christian name?

Well, Stewart, you have only shown a snippet of the document. I cannot see what comes in front of Oziemblowski. My first impression, when I see a name printed like that, is that first someone had written the name in script and then someone else came along and added it in block letters to clarify what was otherwise hard to read. Does that fit with what you can see when you look at the more complete document?

Full document attached. It seems odd because there's usually only 2 witnesses listed, then that name

Hi Stewart,

That's a puzzle. Does it imply that witness J.B. Blair is also known as Oziemblowski? I doubt it. It is not the name of someone who performed the ceremony, because this marriage was done by the registrar. So I cannot think of any reason for that name to be written there.

Anyone else want to weigh in?

Hi,
Is it possible to see previous and subsequent entries? Does Oziemblowski appear there too? Note that only this word is written in block letters.

Not really, I just ordered this from the General Register Office speculatively as a one-off

I've been in contact with Blackpool Registry Office and they've looked at the original document. They say that Oziemblowski is the surname of a 3rd witness and that is was written out in block capitals because the signature was undecipherable.

Hi Stewart,

I found a Jerzy Oziemblowski who was married in 1944 to Vera Barrett. However, Jersy also died in 1944.

I found a Stanislaw getting married to Emilia Loj.

Name Stanislaw Oziemblowski
Registration Date Oct 1950 [Nov 1950] [Dec 1950]
Registration Quarter Oct-Nov-Dec
Registration District Market Harborough
Inferred County Leicestershire
Spouse Emilia Loj
Volume Number 3a
Page number 1659

Otherwise, I am not having much luck finding anyone with the surname of Ozieblowski.

Regards,
Trish

Hi Trish and Stewart,

In addition to the spelling Oziembłowski one could also use the spelling Oziębłowski (that is, without the M in it) which has practically the identical sound in Polish.

Note the naturalization of this same Stanislaw from Leicester used the latter spelling:

https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_q=Ozieblowski&_sd=&_ed=&_hb=

He could have easily switched back and forth between both spellings.

Hi Sophia and Stewart,

Sophia thank you for the information about the surname. I'll keep searching using the various surnames.
