Greetings,

Need assistance to find my grandmother's father Franciszek Kuczynski, born in Prussia around 1859. Don't know the town or his parents, only that he married Veronica (Wadner) ?? Michalska in St. Adalbert's Basilica in 1887,Buffalo NY.

How do I go about getting background on his parents, siblings, wife's true maiden name ?
He's nowhere to be found !
Can you offer some ideas ? I'd appreciate any help.
Thank you,
deidre

Event Place: Dunkirk Ward 1, Chautauqua, New York, United States
Gender: Male
Hi Diedre,

You may already have this information, but I found a 1920 census that I think is the person you are looking for. The link via family search is: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MJKR-JRJ
Below is the text of the record:

Age: 59
Marital Status: Married
Race: White
Race (Original): White
Relationship to Head of Household: Head
Relationship to Head of Household (Original): Head
Birth Year (Estimated): 1861
Birthplace: Germany Poland
Immigration Year: 1884
Father's Birthplace: Germany Poland
Mother's Birthplace: Germany Poland
Household Role Gender Age Birthplace
Frank Kuczynski Head M 59 Germany Poland
Veronica Kuczynski Wife F 49 Germany Poland
Helen Kuczynski Daughter F 18 New York
Katherine Kuczynski Daughter F 16 New York

Some ideas: since you know the year of his marriage, and the location, you can write to the Catholic diocese of New York and they will search for his marriage record. Often, the sacramental records will contain the maiden name of the bride, parents of bride and groom, and possibly village of birth.

Also, the above census indicates he was naturalized as a citizen, most likely in New York. His application for citizenship may also contain information about his birth. Try searching for his immigration records in familysearch.org

I hope this helps a little. All the best,
Cynthia

Deidre,

To add a little to what Cynthia wrote...the marriage records from St. Adalbert's in Buffalo generally are detailed regarding the parties place of birth and since the priests were Polish the spelling is usually correct or extremely close. LDS films for St. Adalbert's are listed on the Family Search site and are available to be rented. It would probably be easier and faster to get the info you need by renting the film.

Gilberto,
Yes, I saw that naturalization record as well. It's a pretty close match to the census information. Too bad there is no information about his village of birth. I tried looking for a passenger list but couldn't find anything close to 1887 arrival date for his name.

Cynthia,

The naturalizaton papers for Southern District are available online through Family Search. However, it would be necessary to decipher what is written on the image above, in order to avoid seeking record by record in https://familysearch.org/search/image/index#uri=https://familysearch.org/recapi/sord/collection/2060123/waypoints
