Hi there

I seek the translation or origin of the surname Niescior. I have done what I could to get information but no avail. The surname seems to be almost non-existant. I am from South Africa and there approximately +-10 with my surname and they are connected to me in some way (via blood or law). I have seen suggestions that there may be links to similar sounding surnames such as Miesciur and Niesciur but I am not entirely sure.

All assistance will be appreciated.

Hi Nieścior,

One Polish diacritic makes a big difference, 735 persons with the name Nieścior in today Poland:
https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/Nie%C5%9Bcior
and 7 Nescior (without accent)
http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/niescior.html

I found here in Polish a good text about your name, refering to the authoritative Polish book
http://genealodzy.pl/PNphpBB2-printview-t-1173-start-15.phtml

//
NIEŚCIOR: Potwierdzam, bardzo stare nazwisko, jak podaje Prof. Rymut w jego pracy "Nazwiska Polaków Słownik Etymologiczno-Historyczny" notowane jako nazwanie osobowe od 1439 roku!, głównie na kresach wschodnich, pochodzące bezpośrednio od nazwania NESTOR (z greki - Nestor), czyli najstarszy z rodu, najbardziej szanowany wśród współplemieńców, szacowny, szlachetny.
//

Translation:

It is a very old name, according to Professor Rymut in his book "The names of the Poles, etymological-historical dictionary", the name Nieścior is noted as personal name since 1439, mainly on Kresy - Eastern Frontier of Poland, etymology is straightforward from the word Nestor (Nestor in Greek), that is, the eldest of the family, the most respected among tribesmen, venerable, noble.

Best,
Elzbieta

Thank you very much for your assistance, it is quite interesting to see the etymology of the surname. So I imagine Nestor the Argonaut, helped fight the centaurs, and participated in the hunt for the Calydonian Boar?
