Post subject: Is Lepunjy near Gororow?
Hello , I have a relative named Karizmerra Sopuch who came here in 1905 via Ellis Island. I think she was a sister of my great grandmother, Frances. She listed her place of origin as Lepungy. I could not find this area on the map. And I do not see her listed as a sibling of my great grandmother, possibly because the town did not begin to record them until a bit later. Does anyone know where this town is? Thanks for your time. Kim McGuirk, NY USA

Kim, Gilberto,
I guess the name could be Lejpuny in county Sejny.
After the WWII county Sejny has been split, part of it, city of Sejny included, staying in Poland.
Lejpuny are today in Lituania, and the name changed to Leipalingis.
Google maps is your friend.
Search for:
Suwałki, Poland
then direction
Sejny, Poland
and at the end:
Lejpuny, Apskritis d'Alytus, Lituania
(45 km between Sejny and Lejpuny by road)
We had here on PO few persons with quite large number of records from Lejpuny, so the name became very familiar to me.
The correct Polish writing of your relative name is Kazimiera Sopuch (which does not mean it's written that way on immigration records).
Best,
Elzbieta

Hi Gilberto, sorry, thats because I just realized she is under Kazimira Lozicky. She came on the same ship as my great grandmother Frances Sopuch so I am thinking that she is Frances' sister and that she married a brother of Frank Lazickis. Seems likely but then again it could be just her sister in law as I think Kazimira is a common name?
. And I just heard from my grandfathers half sister, Phyliss Smolinsky (my great grandmother married again to a Benny Smolinski after Frank failed to return from Poland). Phyliss is quite old but specifically remembers her mother having a brother Frank Sopuch married to a Croccia but she thinks Croccia just might onlhy mean aunt in Polish.
They had 3 sons, Frank Stanley and Leo. Anyway, Frank Sopuch went back to Poland around 1930 as Phyliss recalls going to NY and put him on a boat. He never returned. (seems a common theme with the men in this family).
Phyllis also told me that her mom, my great grandmother, did have a sisters Karsymerra, but that her last name was Gaydos. She went by the name Casey. She came again to stay in the US (I guess she went back and forth) just before Germany invaded Poland in 1937 or 1938.
I am in touch with some of my Lazicki second cousins and since they know even less than I do about this branch of the tree they are excited to hear what I tell them. I just wish I could speak Polish, but I understand it is very difficult.
I probably gave you too much info, sorry, my brain is spinning from all of this. Thank you again! Kim

Thank you Elzbieta, yes, that seems to be the correct spelling though I have so many versions of it. I guess Kazimiera is a common name? I would love to track down some present day Sopuch and Lazycki relatives, but I guess with the language barrier, that is difficult. This website has been a godsend! Many thanks, Kim
