Hello,
I'm looking to try and decipher this WWI draft card and the place it lists for birth. I'm having trouble matching it too any village with that spelling, and was looking for some help with maybe placing that village. I'm leaning towards Ruskowo, but I can't make out the 2nd location.
Thanks
John

I notice that your relative signed the draft card with his witnessed mark "x" which means he could not write. This tells me he provided the information verbally and the clerk completed the card spelling the names of the villages as best he could. Using google maps, the nearest match I found to what is written in the draft card is Ruszków Pierwszy, Poland. Anyone else have suggestions?

He died in 1920 from tuberculosis. There are some Wheeling city records every 2 years from 1915-1919 and the 1920 census, but otherwise, this is the best lead for place of origin. I see Rustowo as a possibility, but have no idea about the second part. On his death certificate it listed his fathers name as Sower or Sewer, which could be Sczcypan? or a variation maybe? Not sure. And from what I've noticed from the records from Wheeling, most got X marked for their name, because they spoke Polish/German/Russian, but not English. One relative was Prylenski, and it got spelled Schauwanske in 1882, Scherwinski, Swinski, Schewinski, etc. Crazy spellings. One child of Stanislaw Jakubiak, was born under Eakabook.

John,

The line 5 gives 3 names: town, state, nation.

The second name is very clear: Przaznysz, should be Przasnysz (no ambiguity here), and that gives a subsequent answer to the town name.
The town, or village name, is written Rustkowo, should be Rostkowo.

Powiat Przasnysz (przasnyski) // County Przasnysz
http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powiat_przasnyski
Gmina Czernice Borowe // community Czernice Borowe
http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Czernice_Borowe_%28gmina%29

Rostkowo is part of the above administrative structure.
http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rostkowo_%28powiat_przasnyski%29

Rostkowo, przasnyski, Pologne
Rostkowo is 6 km West of Przasnysz.

The archives of Przasnysz for 1889 state they have records, in cyrillic Russian, but not on line
http://szukajwarchiwach.pl/79/104/0/-/65#tabJednostka

>>>
On his death certificate it listed his fathers name as Sower or Sewer
<<<

It could be Seweryn or Sewer, Polish first name, from Latin Severus.

John and Elzbieta,

Przasnyz records online available throgh Metryki:
http://metryki.genealodzy.pl/pow-266
However, I did not find in 1887, 88, 89, 90 (there are some Stanislaw Jankowski)

In Geneteka there is a Stanislaw Kubiak, born in 1888, in Wegra (4 miles from Rostkowo, also in Przasznyz), and his father is listed as Ksawery, which is close to the Sower/Sawer spelling found. If it helps, mother was Wiktoria Modzelewska. Birth record #39, available on line through Poczekalnia:
http://poczekalnia.genealodzy.pl/pliki/AP-Mlawa/Wegra/1888/_M_3389.jpg

P.S.; Just noticed the entry of the record reads Rostkowo. It must be him!

John,

I followed up Gilberto's search in GENETEKA - POCZEKALNIA, found Ksawery's birth record and his marriage record.

Both typed and translated.

Polish orthography of Xawery (birth in 1840) moved to Ksawery (marriage in 1864).

Best,

Elzbieta

Thanks Gilberto, I use them, but usually need a reference point to start. Wegra looks to have understandable records it looks like. Started with Josef Jakubiak, and in 1816 there are 2 born. I'll dig em up and try and scan them to here. Probably have to find the marriage between Josef and Anna Kulpanowska to narrow down which is which. Unbelievable find.

Excellent news, hope you will come to Europe.

I want one glass of wine more, here is one generation more, Bartłomiej Jakubiak declaring the birth of his son Jozef Jakubiak in 1817.

Please note that Bartłomiej is 34 in 1817, so he was born circa 1784, in Poland - at that time we had

The occupation of Franciszek Smoleński seems to be important (high standing), he is tenant of a property in noble village. I cannot decipher an old word, which anyway would request for further etymology searching.
It seems that the name of this witness and the name of priest are the same - Smoleński, and, are exactly the same as the name of the villages of nobles - Smoleń, so it's even more important for everyone.

John,

Please have a look on my findings and translations. I got fascinated with first Gilberto's hint, and made it all.
You have Ksawery's birth in 1840 and Ksawery's marriage in 1864 - in addition to Stanislaw's birth in 1888.
Ksawery's father Jozef birth in 1817, declared by his father Bartlomiej.

Best,
Elzbieta

Elzbieta, I've already updated my tree, added the scans, and your translations, all but Bartomiej. Put a special thank you to you and Gilberto, and this site, on the translation. If you ever need Ancestry.com records, feel free to ask.
John

PS
I saw the index from 1816, but was unsure when I saw entry 84 and 91 both listed Jozef Jakubiak. I was going to try and find the marriage between Jozef and Anna Kulpanowska(between 1830-1840 in Wegra) to see the parents names. Or is entry 91 the same person? Added a scan of the Jozef Jakubiak #91

Think I found 1839 marriage of Jozef Jakubiak, Anna's name looks much different than Kulpanowska...not sure. #13
John

PS
I think this is it from 1840, looks like I can read Anna Kulpowski, or close to it in part of it from 1840. Is it odd sometimes the marriages are before the births in the books? From the looks of it there were 2 Jozef's I think, I'm hoping the marriage records will help tell which was which.

John,

The 1839 record is not yours.

The good one is here, in 1840 February (perfect for a baby Ksawery in November).
