Post subject: Jusko, Juszko
Could you tell me if Jusko, Juszko is Catholic or Jewish ?
Michal Jusko came from Gorecko Stare in Russia and spelled his last name Jusko and his brother Jan spelled it with a z.
Also, can you tell me how to find them? I have no info on their family, except the mothers name Ewa Zubul or Zubl,.
Regards,
Deidre

Hi Deidre,
Generally, I would say that you cannot tell a person's religion from their surname. It is often easier to look at first names. For example, when I scroll down the names that happen to come up on a list of births for an area I am interested in, the people named Jozef and Maciej and Katarzyna and Stanislawa are, in my view, quite likely to be Christian, while the people named Hersz and Abram and Rejza and Ryfka are quite likely to be Jewish. With the names you are listing, Michal, Jan, and Ewa, I would guess Christian. Whether Catholic or not, I could not say. Have you tried searching for documents for these people? For example, ship passenger lists if they emigrated?
Best of luck in your search,
Sophia
