Michan is surely not a polish surname, or probably it was misspelled.
It could also be one of those rare surname in Poland of foreign origin.
It depends where your great grandfather was born.
If you research on GENI.com there are some Michan.

Post subject: Michan
Thank you. I know the origin of the name is from Ireland, but there were many Michan/Meehans who left Ireland and worked as mercenaries in mainland Europe and can be found throughout. I have found other Michans listed in the Tarnow Roman Catholic diocese church records, mainly in the Rzeszow area. I just haven't been able to make a clear connection to my family.

Post subject: another variant
Possibly another variant of the name Meehan Michan....is Mikin. I just came across this in my Socha search and this is a cousin to Michal Socha. From Wojcina, Poland area.
