Post subject: S?? Gub. Russia Poland
Hello,
My 2nd great-grandparents are Polish/Lithuanian immigrants who arrived to the United States in the late 1890's. The family name is present day Murosky but has been spelled in many different ways over the years. Family stories indicate the name was previously Marauskas.
The only references I have had to the families origins are:
The 1910 United States Federal Census - country reference Russ-Poland
The 1920 United States Federal Census - country reference Lithuania-Rus
The 1930 United States Federal Census - country reference Lithuania
All three census locations are for Forest City, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania recently started to release the PA birth certificates. There is a birth certificate for my 2nd great uncle. This is the oldest record I have located for the family and it contains the older spelling - Marauskas. The birthplace for the parents Anthony and Eva is recorded.
The birth certificate is attached. Does anyone have any suggestions on what the birthplace may be? The name appears to be abbreviated.
Thank you,
Michelle

Hi Michelle~ Welcome to the Forum. I would guess that Suw. Gub. means Suwalki Gubernia (gubernia is a governmental district sort of like a county here). Here's a link to a wikipedia article on the town Suwalki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suwa%C5%82ki . There's also a research group for this area http://litvaksig.org/-suwalki-gubernia-research-group which appears to be most interested in Jewish records, but there may still be good hints here on how to look for your family's records in the homeland. Good luck. ~PL

Michelle,
Your attachement gives you the original name as Murauckas (Mu not Ma)
http://polishorigins.com/forum/files/42411_3421606190_0692_00200_214.jpg
But I think that "c" should be "s" - Google shows no single Murauckas, but a number of Murauskas.
The mother name in your record is Zilinskinte. But the Lithuanian ending for a young woman is -kaite, so I would correct it to Zilinskaite.
cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithuanian_name
For the both parents the birthplace is Suw as Suwałki. It is in the very North-East of Poland, circa 20 km to Lithuanian border.
Child: Frank Murauskas, born 18 May 1907, 4 pm
Father: Antoni Murauskas, 42 years -- BIRTH-ESTIMATE:1865
Mother: Ewa Zilinskaite, 33 years -- BIRTH-ESTIMATE:1874
I wish you success in finding more.
Suwalki are in public Polish archives http://szukajwarchiwach.pl/
Best,
Elzbieta

Hello Elzbieta,
Thank you kindly for stopping by to provide assistance provide helpful links. This is the first I have located the spelling Murauskas on a record.
In other US based records Eva's surname has been recorded as Zielinski.
When searching in Polish based records would recommend searching using the surnames Murauskas and Zilinskaite? One challenge I have is Antoni and Eva is records indicate that Antoni and Eva traveled to the United States separately arriving in different years. They were married after arriving in Pennsylvania.
Thank you,
Michelle

Michelle,
Re: Suw, as Suwałki
I assumed yesterday, from the US document, that Suwalki was the place of birth.
It is not. On a US document it is the country of birth - Suwałki Governorate was the country of birth of Antoni and of Ewa.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suwa%C5%82ki_Governorate
see specificaly http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suwa%C5%82ki_Governorate#/media/File:Polska_1907_adm.png
The places of birth, for Ewa and for Antoni, are yet to be determined.
Re: Ewa Zielinska vs Eva Zilinskaite
I am puzzled.
We had here on PO a number of records from Sejny county (small part of Suwalki Governorate), including today Lithuania, with names written in Polish. Why Lithuanian writing on the US document if the name was Polish?
But if Ewa was of Lithuanian ethnicity, the Lithuanian writing is obvious.
Re: searching in Polish records
It will be even more complicated, because you will have to deal with Cyrillic (for anything after 1868).
Best,
Elzbieta

Hi Elzbieta,
Thank you for providing additional details.
It looks to me that the mid-wife completed the birth certificate. The signature matches the other writing on the birth certificate. If the US town were they were living was a mix of Polish and Lithuanian perhaps that could explain the mix of Lithuanian and Polish?
It is a puzzle for certain - one I don't know if will ever be solved. The birth certificate also confirms that the family did have some additional children that likely died in infancy.
For folks with family from Suwalki Governorate - do they list Suwalki Governorate as the official place of birth using the place as it would have been in the 1860's?
This is my first experience with Suwalki Governorate.
Thank you,
Michelle

Elzbieta,
I thought you find this interesting. This is the death certificate for the same child. Sadly he only lived a few months. Note the differences in spelling and references to places.

Michelle,
Wow: you have Antoni's handwritten signature from 1895. Here is a table and comments I made.

NB. I wonder if -ey is not Irish universal ending for all names

The "-ey" does seem to be a common ending for names. Perhaps a desire to blend in more? Hard to know. All very interesting!
Thank you again! |
Michelle,
Well, some -ey come to mind:
whiskey
baileys
...
Perhaps a desire to have a drink?
Sorry for kidding, but Justice -ey made me smile.
Best,
Elzbieta

Thanks so much for the research you've done so far. Evidently our relatives had the same nurse/doctor we (some cousins) couldn't figure out what the place was either! I'm just trying to connect the dots from various sources. Here's FB group that's just for us- I only joined today Lithuanians of Eastern Pennsylvania

I believe this is my cousin's grandfather's birth certificate- except for the fact they didn't have copy machines in those days I would've sworn it was a photo copy of what you posted :) |

Good morning!
I see "Suw Gub Poland", which can be Suwalki Gubernia. It does not give the place, but the administrative region, very close to Lithuania.
