Hi there. First I want to again thank you for the help you've given me over the years. I'm trying to find information on my maternal grandmother, Aleksandra Kowarcka (or Kowarska). She was born in Kolniszki, which is now in northeast Poland, around 1895. When she came to the US, in 1914, it was in East Prussia, but all her documents say "Kolniszki, Russia." Is there another Kolniszki (she spoke Lithuanian)? Or did the 1914 residents of Kolniszki think Kolniszki was in Russia? Everything I read says that Kolniszki was German until 1945. I'm very confused by this and would love some information or advice. Thank you!

Mark,

The old geography book have 3 entries for Kolniszki:

http://dir.icm.edu.pl/Slownik_geograficzny/Tom_IV/265
1 *Kolniszki, zascianek powiat wilenski, 3 okreg administracyjny, o 57 wiorst od Wilna, 2 domy, 9 mieszkancow, katolicy (1866)
2 *Kolniszki, niemiecki Kolnisken, Schlossberg, wies na pruskich Mazurach, dawniejszy powiat węgoborski

http://dir.icm.edu.pl/Slownik_geograficzny/Tom_XV_cz.2/102
3 *Kolniszki, wies powiat święciański, gmina i dobra skarbowe Daugieliszki (9 wiorst); miala 7 dusz rewiz.
https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powiat_%C5%9Bwi%C4%99cia%C5%84ski
Do 1919 roku powiat guberni wileńskiej Imperium Rosyjskiego. // until 1919 county Święciany was part to gubernia Wilno, Russian imperium

Kolniszki 1 are in Wilno area, as are Kolniszki 3. In Kolniszki 3 item it's noted that it belongs to the county Święciany. Digging in powiat Święciany, we learn it is 60 km north of Wilno.

Kolniszki 2 are in Mazury

The distance between the two, Kolniszki 3 and Kolniszki 2 is circa 350 km, 200 miles.

If your maternal grandmother spoke Lithuanian, it is almost sure she was from Wilno area, not Mazury in Prussia.

Best,
Elzbieta

Elżbieta,

Thank you so much! This is so interesting! Wow, it looks like I have a lot more research to do! When we lived in Latvia for a couple of years, I was in touch with the Lithuanian State Archives, and they were extremely helpful on my maternal grandfather. I'll try to get in touch with them again now. Wow. Thank you so much. I'm very grateful.
