Post subject: BASIAKIEWICZ ~ IS IT REAL?
Whilst searching for my grandfather's birth I had a big surprise ... he is registered under the surname BASIAKIEWICZ. Surprise because all his life his surname is Wojtczak, he married and died as Wojtczak and all his children are Wojtczak... and his grandchild - me!
I've run lots of searches in all the usual online genealogical sites and am coming to the conclusion that BASIAKIEWICZ is not a real name.
I find no record of his father's marriage, birth, death, nor anyone else with this surname anywhere in Poland.
So I came here to ask native Polish speakers ~ is this a real name? Or is it (as I suspect) a typo for some other name.

Hi Helena:
I'm not a Polish speaker, but as I was on lubgens.eu, I found the index for three records with the BASIAKIEWICZ name. http://regestry.lubgens.eu/news.php in the parishes of Dys, Kluczkowice and Bychawka. Was your ancestor from the Lublin general area?
Interestingly, on the birth record index for Marian Konstanty in Dys it shows O: Franciszek, M: Bronisława Wojtczak. Wojtczak appears to be his mother's maiden name.
I then searched for variant spellings ASIAKIEWICZ - found many MASIAKIEWICZ in Bychawka

Hi Diane and thanks for taking an interest. I still haven't solved this one, and, as it's my granddad, it's seriously holding up my progress on the family tree.
Thanks for the "heads-up" on MASIAKIEWICZ ... it was clever of you to search in that way!
