Post subject: Midwifery in Poland
Hello all,
Can anyone provide me with information about the history, training, and role of midwives in Poland around 1850-1920?
I discovered that my great great grandmother Barbara Bielec nee Wydrzynska is listed on my family birth records as the midwife. She and her family lived in Dynow. I would like to learn more about midwifery in Poland at that time.
Thanks!

I've been curious about the training of midwives ever since I first translated records from Galicia which make mention of an "obstetrix aprobata" (an "approved midwife") and an "obstetrix non examinata" (a "not examined midwife"). Such descriptions of midwives seems to have been limited to the Austrian Partition. Your post spurred me to do a little online research and I found the attached which I find interesting and informative. Perhaps it will give direction to your research regarding midwives. Since the training and licensing of midwives seemed unique to the Austrian Partition I limited my search to "training of midwives in the Hapsburg Empire." The attachment is from: "Moments of Truth: Four Creators of Modern Medicine" by Thomas Dormandy.
