I need help trying to find birth records for my great grandfather John Matthews who immigrated from Russia Poland to New York in approx. 1887. Other first names he used were Konstanty, Constantine. Other last names he used were Matecki, Mateczyn. He was Catholic. He had said that he was from Lithuania. I have never found his ship manifest.

On his naturalization papers it says that he arrived in New York from Russia via Antwerp Belgium on April 30, 1887, vessel name he could not remember. On his First Papers, he says that he was born May 18, 1887 in the county of Walno, Russia. On his second papers he says that he was born May 18, 1864 in Paulesh, Russia. I am not sure if “Paulesh” is or was an accurate name of a town. On the 1900 census he lists his birth as May 1869, immigrating 1888. On the marriage certificate to his second wife, the birthplace was Poland, Wilno.

Any ideas as to how to proceed to search for his birth records and possibly marriage records for his parents, Stanislaw Matecki and Katazyna Ponkoszt. We don’t even know if he had any siblings. Are these records part of Lithuania now? Where do I begin? Is Paulesh correct? In some research I have done, I thought maybe “Paulesh” was Palusz or Polusze or Polurice ?

Thank you so much.

My grandfather has the same birthplace_Wilno, Poland. I found that in some of his records he is listed as coming from Russia. I have come to the conclusion that he was born in Vilnius, Lithuania. It was Russian territory at one time. It is now Lithuania. I don't know how to research his parish records. I think he was from a getto in Vilnius which had many polish and jewish people residing there. He was born in 1898 and came to USA after his family was murdered by the Russians.

@janefrey11
You have interesting story, first start to look in geneteka http://geneteka.genealodzy.pl/index.php?op=gt&lang=eng&w=23lt there are quite many records indexed from Wilno parishes. For further assistance start new thread Smile

@dkhistory
Regarding your thread on other forum. It may be indeed village Pałusze, Oszmiany district, Wilno Woivodeship. Pałusze is near Słobódka with parish founded in 1815. There are some records, also from 1864 on familysearch here https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/1106648?availability=Family%20History%20Library Ask somebody with good russian handwriitng skill to look for record with excact date. Thats good start point in the whole research.
