I have just found out that the 1924 RC Baptisms for Mlawa have been released. [https://skanoteka.genealodzy.pl/id1608-sy1924-kt1]
Unfortunately I can't seem to find an name index/dates etc. Just a list of files like this.

000 076-081 148-153 220-222 286-291 352-356 398-401
001-003 082-087 154-156 223-225 292-295 357 402-405
004-009 088-093 157-159 226-231 296-297 357a 406-409
010-015 094-099 157a 232-237 298-303 358 410-413

Does this mean I have to search every file Crying or Very sad

As I don't know any Polish spoken or written it is a mammoth task for me.
I have gleaned lots of info on my ancester through his Army Records I am wondering whether the RC baptism wll give me any more info than what I already know.

To date I know his full name, Piotr Teresko & date of birth 1st Oct 1924 and place of birth, Mlawa
His Mother's maiden name & place of birth
His Father's Name, Place of Birth & Occupation.

Grateful for any advice pls, thanks Olivia

I have attached a page from the file to show what the baptism looks like.[not mine]

Hi Olivia,

Good news and bad news. The good news is you do not need to look at every image. The images with file names beginning with the letters "SkU" are indices. The bad news is, I do not see him there. Nor do I see any Tereszko which is an alternative spelling you may consider. Are you certain of his birth year? Are you certain he was baptized Roman Catholic?

Sophia

P.S. One more thing you can do. Using Geneteka, which has indexed these records, you can limit your search to only 1924 and look only at the births. You will see, chronologically, exactly who was baptized in this church:
https://geneteka.genealodzy.pl/index.php?op=gt&lang=pol&bdm=B&w=07mz&rid=1974&search_lastname=&search_name=&search_lastname2=&search_name2=&from_date=1924&to_date=1924

Only two children named Piotr were baptized there in 1924. They are #224 (Piotr Grzywiński) and #341 (Piotr Przystup).

P.P.S. One more thing to mention. Please come back from time to time to see if you have had a response on the forum. Even people who have set themselves up to receive automatic notification that they have gotten a reply on this forum often stop receiving the notifications. I don't know why.

Oh no where is this man lol

I think my next step is to find his father's marriage or his death. I think death would be better as we know he died when Piotr was a baby so narrows it down a bit.

Thank you so much for your help much appreciated. I know now to look for indexes!

Hi again Pam56,

It is possible that he was actually baptized in 1925, at a few months of age.

I see that in January 2023 you asked about finding a 1924 Roman Catholic baptismal record for your Piotr Teresko and you provided parents' names as "Platon & Maria." I am guessing that during these past two and a half years you have been patiently waiting for the 1924 records to be posted. Patience is a good quality in a genealogist!

I don't recognize "Platon" as a given name. I am wondering if you have it from a handwritten source (or an index that was made from handwritten source records) and that the name is actually something else. Really squirrelly handwriting for Piotr? Maybe Pantaleon? If you would like to post a link or an image showing where you found "Platon" we may be able to help you decipher it.

Best of luck in your search,
Sophia

Hi Sophia

Been busy trawling through the records.

I've attached ther sources I used for his name.

Talking about names, people tell me that the surname is more Ukrainian than Polish. I do know his birthplace was Rivno and made up of a lot of Ukrainians & about 40% Jewish. His Mother was Marja Szyszko born in Mlawa. All the info is taken from Piotr's army records. I had to wait ages for these hence why I am now starting to research more. His name is spelt laton and Plato.

Thanks

Well, that's me learning something today! The name Платон (Platon) in Ukrainian and Płaton in Polish.
Let me study the files you posted and see if I can help.

Hi Sophia
Well I spen most of last night going thru all my notes, emails etc to try and find any clues I may have missed etc. I came up with this in an email from Monika Helman MOD who sent his Army Records. As Piotr had been dead less than 25 years she couldn't send me all the info but did pick out one or two things she thought I might like to know.

I am now wondering whether this bit of info has any relevance to where the birth certificate might be.

She said "His last address [pre war] was in Mlawa 6, Makowskiego Street"

Monika must have looked this up as she came back with

" Just a suggestion, there is no Makowskiego Street in Mlawa but there is one in Dzialdowo which isn't far [20km away] from Mlawa so maybe he was from there."

I am not sure about this as family lore is that after Platon died, when Piotr was a baby , his brother gave Platon's widow a small piece of and with a cottage on so she could be self sufficient. So could this Street be where the land was? Again it is only family lore so not too sure whether it is true or not although it must have come from somewhere. Maybe Piotr told his children this.

I was just wondering whether or not it has any relevance to where he was baptised or was Mlawa & Dzialdowo in same registration district?

Hi Pam56,

Yes, I did notice the address, 6 ulica Makowskiego and I was also unable to find it on a map. However, streets are often re-named and until we can find a street map of Mlawa from the 1920s or thereabouts, I will just keep an open mind on this. It is quite interesting to see that Dzialdowo has such a street, and I will keep that in mind as well.

I spent quite some time looking at records yesterday. No success yet in finding a birth record for Piotr or a death record for his father.

Thanks also for the clue about Platon having a brother. You have assembled a good collection of documents.

Staying hopeful,
Sophia

Hi Sophia

Yes lots of bits of info from Piot's letters he sent to USA which I managed to track down from his Grandaughter and Army records from MOD Northolt. They didn't release all as he [Piotr] has to be dead 25 yrs + so I'll paitiently wait for those lol

Piotr mentions in letter that his Uncle was a Shoemaker. Family says he was a Farmer, suppose he could be both. Also from MOD files that his father Plato was a Blacksmith.
Family also states that his Uncle had three children Alexandria, Nicolaus & Anatasia [Very Russian sounding names] Don't know whether this is true or not but I don't think family would just make this up so again were did they get this info from, Piotr??
They said his Mother's name was Anna Maria whereas Piotr puts her down as Marja (Maria), maybe he just abbreviated it.

They also sent a small tree which said that Plato/Platon's Mother's maiden name was Kichinski again no idea were they got this from. Might get in touch again and ask. They sent the two letters I mentioned and some photos of Piotr, including one of him & his Mother's sister. So we know he had an Uncle , on Fathers side & an Aunt on his Mother's side

Great photo! Thank you for sharing that.

On the two documents you provided above, the one does give Platon's occupation, but it is not blacksmith. The word there is "robotnik" which is a general word for laborer. You might have found the blacksmith reference on some other document you got from MOD, so I am not counting that out. The other document asks whether Piotr can read and write in Polish, ("znajomość języka polskiego w mowie i piśmie") to which he answers "yes," as well as what other languages he is proficient in ("znajomość języków obcych w mowie i piśmie)" to which he answers "Russian."

There are many baptisms in Mlawa for kids with names Aleksandra, Mikolaj and Anastazja so they would not have been unusual choices. What I am not finding is anyone named Platon.

Lots to sort through!

Loads to sort through although it is easier for me now you have explained it better.

Did a lot of Polish speak Russian, is that usual?

I know that Piotr was an only child so I am presuming that his parents married a year or so he was born so might try to find a marriage. This would maybe be the hammer that cracks the nut lol

I read somewhere that they married young according to the area and usually in the Bride's parish so I'm starting with Mlawa.
Will check out where I found out Blacksmith, I really need to organise my notes better!
Pam

Hi Sophia

It was off this document, the Blacksmith bit. Someone transcribed it for me.

Hmmm. Maybe your transcriber saw the part for "stan rodzinny" and read it as kowal? What is says is "kawaler." It is not asking for his profession. Kawaler means that Piotr is a bachelor.

For his "zawód cywilny," (civilian occupation) I do see that Piotr is "szewc uczeń," a shoemaker's apprentice. Working for his uncle, do you think?

I just want to add, this document is crystal clear about the place he is from. It gives Mlawa as his miejsowosc, his gmina and his powiat. He has to have been from Mlawa itself and not from its outskirts.

Thanks Sophia for helping to transcribe it for me, very helpful.

As you say he is definetely from Mlawa, he states that on every document he never deviates from it.
I think he would have been learning the trade as he mentions his Uncle teaching him in his letter.

I am just so puzzled as to why I can't pin him down with his birth civil or baptism. Not even his father's death. Mind you if they were living elsewhere it may be registered there. So fustrating that he is within grasp yet still a millon miles away.

Tomorrow I am going to try & find a marriage of his parents. I believe that it gives a lot of info.

In your opinion, looking at the photo I sent, his Aunt doesn't look that much older than him so his Mother wouln't be that old when she had him. What do you think?

Pam
