Post subject: Gwizdow, Galicia, Austria
Greetings all:
New to this forum which looks like a true gem!
My grandfather Josef Gwizdowski. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1904. His brother Jan Gwizdowski preceded him in 1901.
Both list Gwizdow, Galicia as their birthplace on various records here in the states and claim Austrian citizenship on their Declarations. Their parents are listed as Antoni Gwizdowski and Agnes Czerwinska.
I've been able to trace both brothers back to the Hamburg passenger lists and hit the wall there. There is a town of Gwizdow in southern Poland, and several a couple others with hyphenated names, but I really have no idea how best to proceed.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

Joe,
I have found the entry for Jozef in 1904, but Jan was found in 1910 (with Anna and children), not in 1901. Jan declared his father was Antoni. I have found records online for a Gwiazdow (link below) but could not find an entry for Jozef in 1879 or 1880.

Births 1879 start on image/scan nr. 67, and 1880 on image 34. Then villages are alphabetically listed.

Joe,
I looked for Jozef at the Polish State Archives site, and just like Gilberto, I didn't find him.in those birth years. If you are new to this you might want to look at this: https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/images/a/a1/How_to_Use_the_Digitized_Records_of_the_Polish_State_Archives%29.pdf
With the link that Gilberto gave you, you just have to click on one of the entries, and when that comes up, click digital copies. He gave you the scan number to where the births in 1879 and 1880 start.
The scanning of records from the State Archives is a work in progress, but they have quite a bit from Gwizdow. The first entry is a map of Gwizdow from 1853. It is in pieces here. Unfortunately I don't think it includes the property key. The second entry is Gwizdow deaths 1890-1906. Next are deaths 1784-1822. Next are deaths 1823-1850. Following these are birth, marriage, and death records from Gwizdow and surrounding villages (I assume they all attended the same church), and they are separated by the years 1876-1881, 1882-1886, 1887-1891, 1872-1873, 1871-1872, 1875-1876. Last is card information of deceased military personnel in alphabetical order.
You do have to go page by page in these records to look for your surname. If you are unfamiliar with these records, this should help:
http://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/images/b/bf/Catholic_Vital_Records_of_Galicia-Halychyna_by_Matthew_R._Bielawa.pdf
Oh, and you should know that sometimes the priest will separate a surname, and put what didn't fit in the box on the next line.
I know it is discouraging that neither of us found your grandfather Josef's birth record, but often enough people are surprised that their relatives weren't born when they said they were. Birthdays and ages weren't as big a deal as they are now. Did you grandfather ever have a different birth day or year on any records? You could try looking for his brother Jan's birth record. I didn't know when he was born. When I was looking, I was hoping to find any child born to Antoni and Agnes. Oh, and the first names will be Latin. Josef would be Josephus, and Jan would be Joannis or Joannes.

You are all amazing! I can't thank you enough for the great information you've provided here which, I am sure, will keep me quite busy for quite some time!
Both grandfather Josef, and his brother Jan were consistent on all the documents I've gathered here in the states regards to their birth dates, immigration dates, etc. I've been able to document their lives quite completely following their arrival here. I am hopeful that the leads you have given me here will help in my research in understanding their origins.
Thank you very, very much!
