Hello my PO friends,

My researcher in Vilnius just found on a marriage record the names of my 4th great grandparents and because of this I can add another surname to my tree.

The mother of the groom on the record is Teresa Jastrzembska, which must mean her family name is Jastrzembski. She was listed as a noblewoman on the record but the question is what is the origin of the name Jastrzembski? I seem to recall my reading about WW2 Polish code names during the Warsaw uprising of 1944, and a similar word meaning hawk or falcon?? I am probably way off though.

Many thanks for the help.

Hugh

Hugh,

Jastrzembski comes from Polish word jastrząb- „hawk”, however the surname is a toponym from Jastrzębie, Jastrząbki (common place name in Poland).

In 2002 there were 553 individuals using the surname Jastrzembski/Jastrzembska living in Poland. Detailed map of the surname distribution can be found here for men: https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/Jastrzembski .

In the old Poland there was a few noble families of Jastrzębski, I have not found mention about Jastrzembski version.

Listen how your surname is pronounced in Polish (click on the “Listen” button): https://translate.google.com/#pl/en/Jastrzembski and https://translate.google.com/#pl/en/Jastrzembska .

And here in PolishOrigins Surnames Databaseyou will find other PolishOrigins members interested in Jastrzembski surname: http://polishorigins.com/surnames/search/string/Jastrzembski .
