Post subject: Anyone know where Lenka Szczuczyn is??
Hello:
I am trying to find my ggrandmother, Helena Makuch place of birth in Poland. Her port of arrival record says: Lenka Szczuczyn BUT her passenger record says:
Szczuczin-Lenka, Dombrowa. Furthermore, her petition for Naturalization says: Leki.
They are familiar but I am trying to find out where it was when she was born in 1897 and where it is located currently, after all the boundary changes. I would love some advice on where anyone thinks it is. Please help!!!
Many Blessings,
Brandy Piotrowski Dowen

Welcome to the Forum Brandy,
In such cases I always recommend to upload scans of the original documents here, for us to help in deciphering the places (or surnames) names. However, in your case, with a great probability your ggrandmother Łęka, Szczucin and Dąbrowa are in the Tarnów area. These should be: Łęka Szczucińska, Szczucin and Dąbrowa Tarnowska, click here for the google map: http://bit.ly/auDJtJ .
At the and of 19th century it was Galicia - Austrian partition of Poland, very close to the border on Wisla river with Russia. Click here for the map of Polish territory at that time: http://forum.polishorigins.com/files/map_polish_territory_in_19_century_437.jpg
Roman catholic vital records from this Szczucin parish, even from the mid 17th hundreds, can be found in Tarnow Archdiocese Archives.
I hope it helps a little

Brandy,
How exciting for you - the LDS Family History Center has images of some of the church records!
Poland, Kraków, Szczucin (Dąbrowa Tarnowska) - Church records Kopie księg metrykalnych, 1800-1845 Kościół rzymsko-katolicki. Parafja Szczucin (Dąbrowa Tarnowska) and Księgi metrykalne, 1748-1995 Kościół rzymsko-katolicki. Parafja Szczucin (Dąbrowa Tarnowska)

Thank you so very much for finding out that information and then typing it all in! Your such a great help. Thats funny that you replied with where to find the info at LDS because I was looking it up late last night using what I already had but it wasn't complete until Zenon relied and I couldnt find it. Now it seems I have a complete place to look and a place to get the records from. I am overjoyed! I dreamt of Poland all night and in my dream I walked the land of my ggrandparents!
I will let ya know how it goes and I am going to order the documents this week. Thank you again,
Many Blessings,
Brandy

Dzi?kuj? bardzo. I love it and it is easy to use. My daughter and I got so excited because we are beginning to learn Polish. I checked out the link to Szczucin and it was very informative. You have helped me tremendously.
You stated your grandfather's records were in Tarnow Diocese, is this where your Makuch family is? What was his last name? I will reread your journey and see if you mention your Makuch family?
Thanks,
Brandy

Brandy,
My grandfather's name was Kulawiak. He was born in Luslawice, which is near Zakliczyn in the Tarnow Diocese. My family is from Odrowaz, but right before our family came to America, my grandmother and the children were living in Luslawice. I'm trying to solve the mystery why they were there when the rest of the family remained in Odrowaz.
About Makuch. I don't have a Makuch in my family. I posted this link a while back because it was related to my village:
http://forum.polishorigins.com/viewtopic.php?t=372
The posting was about a birth certificate that is for sale on an auction site:
http://www.delcampe.net/page/item/language,E,id,53786905,var,Josepus-Makuch-Chatarina-Hatyja-Odrowaz-Tarnow-Galicia-Lodz-Poland-1856-AV657.html
If you enlarge the photos of the document, it is easy to see why the seller mis-spelled the surnames, but I'm quite sure that the correct surnames are Makacz and Matyja. The certificate records the 1823 birth of Jozef Makacz (Makuch?) to Andrzej Makacz and Katarzyna Matyja. I have this birth in the records I collected during my trip. This record happened to be on the same page as one of my ancestral records so I recorded it also. So, unfortunately it looks like this record is not part of your family
However, I am very hopeful that you will find what you are looking for in the church records! You will need to contact your nearest family history center and request the microfilm. They will cost you about 6 dollars per roll and it will be sent to your local family history center (FHC) from Utah. If you plan to go to Poland soon, I suggest ordering the films so you can confirm that this is where your ancestors definitely came from. Then you can start planning your trip!!!!! How exciting!

violin75 wrote: | I will definitely upload the documents you asked for just give me a day or so. Do I upload them back here? |
Yes, you can upload it (or them) here, in this thread. Click here: http://forum.polishorigins.com/viewtopic.php?p=373#373 to read short instruction about attaching files to posts in our Forum.
violin75 wrote: | Question: You wrote that the place is Leka Szczucinska, Szczecin and Dabrowa Tarnowska
How would I write this down as her place of birth? What comes first?
Leka Szczucinska: is this the village?
What is Szczecin, the city ?
Dabrowa Tarnowska is this like an American County? |
This is correct, Łęka Szczucińska is the village (now it seems to be part of the town of Szczucin), Szczucin (not Szczecin, which is another town in nort-west corner of Poland) was the parish seat for the Łęka Szczucińska, and Dąbrowa Tarnowska is the biggest town, county for this area. BTW, I had chance to visit Dąbrowa Tarnowska a few times, once with my guests from Florida. Click here: http://polishorigins.com/document/genealogy_tours and among many other albums of Polish places you will find at the bottom of the page link to Dąbrowa Tarnowska photographs.
violin75 wrote: | This is in Malopolskie, right? Was it the same when she was born? |
Yes, this is in Malopolskie (Krakow) province, just on the border with Swietokrzyskie (Kielce) province. In 19th this area belonged to Austria (Galicia territory) and bordered with Russia. The natural border was on Wisla river. I found an interesting website about Szczucin history: http://www.kurier.zicom.pl/index.php?action=gaulle in Polish, and here: http://bit.ly/chHSUq translated by google translate tool into English. What may be the most interesting for you there is mentioned late Teresa Kańska nee Makuch, a Polish literature professor born in Szczucin
violin75 wrote: | Also, please excuse the misspelling of some of the letters , I don't have Polish letters yet. |
No problem at all. You can have them all by copying them immediately from our Polish Genealogy Databases tool here: http://polishorigins.com/databases/ .

I am eternally thankful to you. |

Post subject: My scans-1
Zenon:
Here are the scans I told you about. There are a total of four. First one Petition for Naturalization -notice it says Leka, Poland towards the top. I had to reduce the rest of the document because it was too big, so I am submitting the part that shows her village...all new for me!
3 more...
Thanks a lot,
Brandy
