Post subject: Harbut surname
In researching my grandfather, Maciej Harbut, from Czarny Dunajec I have come across hundreds of people in England researching Harbutt. Does anyone know if these Brits are Polish in origin or is it a derivation of another name?

According to the great book Polish Surnames: Origins and Meanings by Fred Hoffman Harbut or Herbut is Germianc dithematic name Heribod (heri "army" + bod "master"). German king ca. 400.
There are only 178 people bearing Harbut surname and almost half of them (86) lives in Nowy Targ county. I can't say if the surnames Harbut and British Harbutt are of the same origin from German Heribod, but I think there is such possibility.
