On the passenger lists from Ellis Island, does the "last place of residence" mean this is where our ancestors
originated from, or the place they boarded the ship? Is this where we start looking for them?
What if we cannot find out anything about these towns listed?
Also a question on "ethnicity", knowing ancestors are Polish and it is listed "Russia, Polish".
Any help is appreciated.

Residence means where they lived last, the last town before boarding the ship you could say. The top of the list shows where the ship sailed from and where it was going to. A lot of people from the Galacia area had this on their records. Mine did to, but they were from Nowy Targ in southern Poland. But that was the largest town close to where they lived only, they were from the village of Grón actually. BTW, thousand's of Poles left through Bremen, Germany to the USA.

Thank you Bill for this information. I am trying to find the actual town where my grandparents were born, or at least where they were living last with other family
members, including their parents. The "ethnicity" and "last place of residence" is confusing me. Some of the info I found just doesn't seem to match up with
the family stories. But I am just beginning this search, so I have a lot to learn and understand. I appreciate your help.

You have to be familiar with the changes of the partitions and what part of Poland that was controlled by whom, at certain time frames. I am familiar with Galacia (southern Poland) especially around the Tatra Mountains if I can be a help to you. In my 30 yrs of research family stories are often wrong, listen to them for clues, but trust the facts in the end. To help you what do you know about them?

I have researched a little and know that Poland at one time or another was ruled by Russia, Prussia and Germany.
My grandmother lists Austria, Polish as ethnicity. Last residence was Pawelslemien, Austria. When it was listed the name and address of someone from where
she came from, she listed her father's name and the name of the town of "Terval" (not sure if this means Tirol or Tyrol?), not sure if this is where her father is from and the rest of the family she left behind. Ship was Kroonland, and port of dept. was Antwerp.

Whew! I'm hoping the kid on line 04 is traveling with your Regina right now. I know exactly where he is from. He is a Goral like me. Keep your fingers crossed that is good. Anyway I sent a copy to my friend in Poland to see what he think it is, he speaks Polish , Goral, German and Russian. It's 3 am over there so we will have to wait. So far I have Pawel slowieu slowieuska p Powasinasa gal. But that gal is GALICIA, that is for sure. Send me your email address so I can send you a copy of the document.

Linda: I have both pages of her manifest. Write me so I have your ID to send them to you..

For everyone (how I get them):

To obtain a copy of the manifest (could be one or two pages - depends on when !).. bring it up on your screen, enlarge it.
THEN,
1: Use a program that can 'capture' your screen, such as "IRFANVIEW" (google it, download the program, install it - if you don't
already have it! it's a VERY useful tool)

2: If you know how to go to your Internet Explorer's (or whatever) TEMP files, the manifest image will be named TIFGIF[x].GIF
(where the x can be 1, 2, 3, etc depending on how many others you've also downloaded. Copy it from the TEMP file area
to any where you want it).

my id is my Surname on AOL dot COM site (obscure to keep spammers from searching for ID's)

Be careful using the town or nationality given. My own relatives used either the largest nearby city, or the central town of their province. They *DID* give the correct address (town) of their contact. Though Russia 'ran' Poland, some say 'ruled', many emigrants would leave the country blank, many would give "Russia", and others either "Poland, Russian" or "Russia,Poland" .
I hadn't noted many giving "Poland, Austria" or "Poland, Prussia".. The politics varied, as well as people's attitudes toward their being ruled.

One onther thing, Use Steve Morse's "Gold Form" to search. He gives you MANY MORE ways to find your relative's name. I once
searched for everyone coming from my great grandfather's village and got a number of 'hits'. You can't do that from the Ellis Island web site! http://stevemorse.org/ellis2/ellisgold.html
