Post subject: LOOKING FOR MY POLISH FAMILY HISTORY: LAST NAME ZIMBA
Hello everyone. I was wondering where I can find some information about my Polish roots. Here is what I know. My grandmother is from New York. She married my grandfather Joseph Cooper. Her name is Anna Zimba Cooper. She is of Polisha no Austrian heritage. I believe my great grandfather was Polish. My grandmother siblings were John P. Zimba, Joeseph Zimba, William Zimba, Eleanor Zimba Peller, and Frank Zimba. I don't know much about them but I know they were all in the US. My great grandparent's name were Valentine and Gabriella Zimba. Any information would be very helpful. Hoping to find family in Poland. Thank you.

Greetings,
My guess is that the Polish version of your ancestor's name was Ziemba, not Zimba.
See distribution of 4500+ persons with the name Ziemba:
http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/ziemba.html
See 23000+ persons (extremely popular) with the name Zięba:
http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/zi%25C4%2599ba.html
There is a clear concentration of that name in the South-East Poland, line Krakow - Rzeszow and everything below, Galicia.
Etymology of Ziemba is:
Ziemba - od zięba ‘ptak z rodziny łuszczaków’, też od ziębić ‘chłodzić’ // "zięba" = name of a bird, finch, chaffinch; also "ziębić"= to chill

Other articles about Ziemba:

Do your have birth or marriage certificates of you grandmother Anna from New York? Or your great grandparents Walenty and Gabriela? The idea is to try to find any hint about place of origin in Poland.
Best,
Elzbieta

Post subject: Ziemba in Poland
I am so thrilled that I just saw this post. I, too, have been researching my Polish ancestry. Both sets of grandparents are from Poland. My grandfather, Josephus (Joseph) Ziemba was born in Jazwiny, Rzeszow, Poland in 1878. After two years of researching, I found he emigrated to the USA in June 1900 with a relative, Wojciech Baran who was also from Jazwiny. I found Joseph's parents' names, Wojciech Ziemba and Eva Baran in his marriage records and in the records from the funeral home my grandfather was buried from. I know I have the correct names for my great-grandparents. Now I need to delve further and find my great-great grandparent's names. I am hoping that somehow these names would be in the marriage record of Wojciech Ziemba and Eva Baran. Those records are in Poland and I don't know where to begin looking. I have worked mainly with Ancestry.com and Familysearch.org. If anyone can guide me in the right direction I would appreciate it SO much. I have gotten such valuable information from this website. I would never be this far in my ancestry research had it not been for Polish Origins!
With much gratitude,

PS...I did my DNA with ancestry.com and found I am 100% Eastern European!

I share the same great grandparents as rapid1996. I was close to all the people listed. William was my grandfather. Valentine & Gabriella Zimba were married at the Leo House soon after she arrived in NY.
I am stuck on Ziemba also. I am curious as to why you wrote Walenty rather than Valentine. Was Walenty a name used for Valentine or vice versa?
I have one barely legible ship record of Valentine but his occupation is wrong. The ship record that fits his birthday and occupation as Walenty Ziemba. Any help would be appreciated.
