Post subject: Origin of Tereba surname
I have never been able to work out the origin of my mother's surname Tereba, until I was mucking around on Halgal.com last night and looking at old maps. I found the place that her family had come from, Dzikowiec in Podkarpackie (which I highlighted in red) and then looking down I was so surprised to see Tereba as a place on the map and not too far from Dzikowiec (highlighted in green). I have obviously never linked the surname as being named after a place before, but am I right in thinking that Tereba (as a place) doesn't exist anymore?

Yes, though it appears as Tereby in present day Poland map.
Tereba - z fonetyką ukraińską od podstawy trzeb , por. imiona złożone typu Trzebiesław, Trzebomysł oraz trzeba ‘potrzeba; należy’; trzebić.

Post subject: Thanks Gilberto!
Thank you for the info Gilberto! Tereby doesn't seem to come up on Google though. Good to see that the village lives on. Would it be possible to have a translation of the surname etymology?? Just want to make sure I understand what it all means.
Thanks again,
Megan.

Megan,
as to the translation I will leave it to polish speakers. I just have a rough idea of the meaning.
