Post subject: Witnesses on marriage records
Hello,
I’m trying to translate some Jewish marriage records from Poland and have a question about some of the grammatical nuances. The marriage records often list the familial relationship of the witnesses. However, many records don’t seem to specify whether the this relationship is through the bride or groom’s side of the family.
For example, I often have phrases like “Wolfa Goldmann, ciotecznego brata wstepujacego w stan malzenski”, “Hersza Szemel stryja wstępującej w stan malzenski”, or “Dawida Knopf, brata sztryjecznego”. Is there a way based on Polish grammar to determine if witnesses like these are related to the bride or the groom’s family?
