My grandfather listed his place of birth as Minsk on most documents but also what appears to be Malywok or Malja—k, Russia. He arrived in Ellis Island in 1914. I see that there is a Minsk in Poland, east of Warsaw as well as in what is now Belarus.
He was Russian Orthodox, served in the Russian Army, his passport was issued by Russia, he traveled from Liepaja(?) on the ship Russia, but I believe he spoke Polish...married my grandmother who was Polish.
Any suggestions on how, where to look to solve this dilemma? BTW, Ancestry genealogists could not find any info.
Many thanks for any insight.
