My maternal g-grandmother, Rosalia Florek, born about 1850, of Pekelnik, married Jan Okarmus, had several children including my grandmother, Karolin who married Ignac Granot of Pekelnik. They migrated to western Pensylvania where my mother Caroline and three other children were born. I emphasize my female line because I chose to do a complete mitochondrial DNA test and was quite surprised by the results. Not only do I have a rare haplotype, but a complete match, that is over 16,000 base pairs, has been found in a descendent of a woman who lived about 15 miles away from Piekielnik. No doubt we are recent relatives. Moreover we have some high resolution matches in this area. There are probably more of us!

So, even though Y-DNA is considered the gold standard for genealogical purposes, it is possible that mtDNA will find some recent relatives, too.

Piekielnik's church records reside at the parish, so the start of my family search is at a standstill. Without tracing my family here, the start of my paper trail to try to link to other families is stopped.
Traveling there is out of the question. Any ideas, names of good researchers, any help at all.
Carolyn

Hi Carolyn!
This is so interesting - I'm hoping that when my father and I do some DNA testing, we will find some interesting clues to our heritage also. I've come across others with family from Piekielnik who are also frustrated with the lack of access to church records. Why don't you post your message on the Piekielnik website also at http://forum.polishorigins.com/viewtopic.php?p=1228#1228

You never know when someone will plan a trip with Zenon to Piekielnik and maybe they will capture some images of your ancestor's records.

I am also curious about this village because I've met several people with Kadlub ancestors from there - Kadlub was my great-grandmother's maiden name - and even though my great-grandmother was born in a nearby village (Odrowaz) I think there is a strong possibility that the Kadlub's from Piekielnik are related to my family.

Barbara,
Good, what are your family names and areas in Poland? Can you be more specific on the tests that you ordered?

The more tests and testng that is done, the more we will learn about our distant and near ancestry.
