Hiya - One of my ancestors had the last name of Wandów. Some people have suggested that this is actually a place name.

She married Pawel Zalewski somewhere around 1860-1870 and had at least 3 children that we know of:

Jozef 1870 (possibly died in steel mill accident in Chicago in the early part of the 1900s, but it is not certain, see note)
Jakub 1872 (moved to Wisconsin, became a farmer, and had a bunch of kids, died in 1952)
Szczepan 1876 (moved to Chicago, died 1925, my great-granfather, born somewhere around Łyse, Kolno County, Russian Poland)

Does anyone know if this name (Wandów) really refers to a place? Anyone have more info on this family?

*Note: According to "The Day Book" published on 3/22/2915 a J. Zalewski of 8628 S. Marquette died of an accident at the Illinois Steel Company. Could be our Jozef. Third victim of the accident.

Thanks!

If any of these people went to USA and filed a petition to become a naturalized USA citizen, then you might be able to find the petition they filed. There will be information on it including birth Surname (versus American surname/change), town where born, birthday, etc. Some of this information can be useful to narrow down your search.

I think the Lublin one is most likely since my Szczepan Zalewski, when he naturalized, had to swear off allegiance to the Czar. That was around 1917 (must have been right before the red revolution), but he came here in 1893. I suspect that his parents stayed in the old country.

How can I see what is in this? Do I have to order from Utah?
