I'm new at this...so please be patient with me. My grandmother's maiden name was Karpowicz. The family history is that she came from Nowy Targ (?sp) in Galicia, Austria or Poland. She was born @1878.

I researched your Polish Origins Surnames Database and found that the surname had three Galicia connections...but none were Nowy Targ. I believe Galicia is considered the county or area. Is that correct? Is Nowry Targ a town or village? Are any of these towns or villages near Nowy Targ.... Glojsce or Lysa Gora or Old Zmigrod.

I hope someone can help me.

Thank you.

Rose Anne, I think I can answer your questions. To condense this history lesson, think of Galicia as an area that Austro-Hungary annexed from Poland in 1772. Poland got the area back after WWI-so they are the same place. 1772-1920 called Galicia. 1920 to 2011 its Poland. Some of this annexation extended into the Ukraine but this does not apply to you. So look on a map and find the old capital of Krakow-go directly south and you will find the town of Nowy Targ now go east and locate Nowy Sacz, just beyond that is Glojsce. It is 52 miles distant-73 miles by car. All 3 of your villages are near each other (1-2 mi). See my maps. (Double click on the pic to enlarge) (Nowy Targ is New Market and Stary Zmigrod is Old Zmigrod) Hope this helps you, Bill
