I remember as a child my mother or some friends would ask what are you.

A Grodzieniak or Galiciak? Spelling may not be correct.

What is this referring to?

Just a thought but not sure?

Maybe it means which partition (Russian,Prussian,Galicia)the family came from in Poland like Galicia area? This is just a guess from the spelling of the 2nd word you typed (Galiciak)??

When I typed this word(galiciak) into google it brought up Galicia!
