Post subject: Polish Orphaned Children
I have recently had conversations with my neighbours here in Australia. Mel Chara another member of Polish Origins was also in attendance.
I was shocked to find out that approx. 730 orphaned children ended up in New Zealand in around 1944. The Russians has previously taken these children along with their families to Syberia. This was usually done in the early hours of the morning. They never saw their homes again.
My neighbours Arthur and Stephanie were two such children taken at night. An article called "The Invited" by Krystyna Skwarko can be viewed at www.polishheritage.co.nz/PAHIATUA/SKWARKO/S3/S03TA
I can't imagine what these children must have seen and experienced.
Stephanie has told me she watched her parents die of starvation. Arthur said they could not even bury their parents bodies as the Syberian ground was too icy to dig.
I hope this information helps someone. It may help someone out there trace lost relatives. I hope so.

Many thanks for posting about this issue of the children. I confess that I had never even thought about how Poles came to be in Australia (or NZ) before I read Tad's story here in this forum.
The stories can be very disturbing!
I wanted to read the one you linked to, but I get the message that "The requested URL /PAHIATUA/SKWARKO/S3/S03TA was not found on this server."
