Could someone tell me the origin and meaning of the surname Steplowski.
I'm asking for a friend who knows very little about his family, other than their place of origin is Poland.

Step or Stepl is the 'root' part of the name, -ow and -ski are suffixes added to the name.
I would suggest you to read the article in http://www.polishroots.org/Research/SurnameSearch/SurnameOrigins/tabid/117/Default.aspx
and also the two links at the bottom of that webpage.
Also, the surname is not listed in Zofia Kaleta's book, which contains hundreds of -ski surnames based on names of places.

James, it has been a rather long while since you posted this question but I would like to add some more information.

According to William Hoffman’s Polish Surnames. Origins and Meanings, the root of this name is the word stempel meaning “a die, a stamp”. It gave rise to such names as Stempel, Stemplewski, Stemplinski, Stemplowski, Stępel, Stęplewski, Stęplowski and Sztempel.

Stemplowski and Stęplowski (e with a “tail”) are variations of the same name as their pronunciation is virtually identical – please listen to this text-to-speech converter:

I had just done a little research the other day on this name, so what a surprise that you sent this to me.
The different spellings should help in searching Ellis Island Records.
I'm sure that my friend Jeffery Steplowski, will be excited to know this.
