My grandmother's maiden name was Brzek. I'm wondering if it could have been shortened when she came to the U.S. Does anyone have an idea what it could have been shortened from? I can't find Brzek on any websites.

Hello Eastsider,

Brzęk (with hook below "e") from Polish brzęk- „rattle, clang".

In 2002 there were 860 people using the surname Brzęk living in Poland, many of them in the old Galicia area. Detailed map can be found here https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/Brz%C4%99k .
