Jan 27

John (Jan) Vilchock (Wilczak)
b. about 1875 in Russian Poland
d.?
Arrived by almost all accounts I’ve seen in 1902

Mary (Marya) Vilchock (Wilczak)
b. 1882 in Russian Poland
d.?
Conflicting times for her arrival and I cannot figure out if she came with children later on?

I feel like I’ve covered a lot of ground in regard to viewing data from the US, so my overall goal now is to find out exactly what village they came from in Poland and go deeper down the line over there.

That being said, there are some big gaps in information here. For example I cant find them in the 1920 or 1940 census? Some of the difficulty I am experiecening must be related to the fact that my last name has appeared many different ways. Wilczak (the original spelling and sometimes used) Vilchock (what it has morphed into today, and appears on some records this way) then I’ve seen Vitchok, Vilchok, Vidchok all used in records pertaining to this part of my family.

Here is what I have so far, but need help with.

I know John and Mary Vilchock, are my great great grandparents and they came from somewhere in Poland. These names have popped up in my research Lipnica Wielka Orwa Galicia, and Lipinski. So I am stuck there. George the eldest son’s naturalization papers appear to list the village of Lipinski, Galicia?

I know they had 8 or 9 kids. 1 child is sort of mysterious, with no information about him anywhere other than the 1910 census as an 8 month old (my gut instinct is that he may have passed away as an infant), anyway here are the children of John and Mary listed from oldest to youngest (this is my great grandfathers generation)

According to the 1910 census

John 35 yrs old b. Russian Poland

Mary 28 b. Russian Poland

George 11 b. Russian Poland

Joseph 9 b. Russian Poland

Michael 6 b. Russian Poland

Hellen 3 b. Pennsylvania

William 8/12 b. Pennsylvania

The next time they appear in the census is 1930 and most of it makes pretty good sense. John and Mary are there and so is George, because from what I’ve heard from family members first hand is that he was crippled due to a mining accident and remained at home. In addition to John and Mary and eldest son George, Bella, Pauline, Anna, and John Joseph are all there. Joseph, Michael, and Hellen have all moved out, but I cannot locate any census info on them or the mysterious William. I know 3 out of 4 of them exist because Michael is my great grandfather and there is information on Joseph and Hellen later on.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated as I have seem to hit a brick wall in my research. Small things pop up here and there but sometimes they can be misleading or I cannot tell if I am looking at a family with the same name….

Thank you so much and I eagerly await your responses!

Thanks,

Jaye Joseph Vilchock Jr.

Jaye,
Have you dismissed this Jan Wilczak?
http://www.ellisisland.org/search/shipManifest.asp?pID=102642080409
He was the correct age. Lipinki could very well be Lipinski. Yes, usually the wife and children came after the head of the family made enough money for the tickets.

I think Cheri found right manifest and the village is Lipinki in Małopolskie Voivodeship https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lipinki,_Lesser_Poland_Voivodeship
The manifest for Mary is here http://www.ellisisland.org/search/passRecord.asp?order_num=709207068&MID=14212200130896944608&order_num=709207068&ORDER_ID=1600296138&pID=102538012342 she's heading to husband Jan Wilczak, she is going with only two children. Here's the family in 1920. The surname was indexed as Vilockl. I forgot to mention that in 1940 they lived in Old Forge, Lackawanna County, PA. Same town in 1920

I think Sirdan found the right manifest too. I imagine that George's Polish name Wojciech was on his naturalization papers. I see that John had applied, he had pa=papers in the census. Even if he didn't become a citizen, you should be able to get a copy of those papers - the first step in the citizenship process.

Just in case Lipinki is the correct village, someone there started process of preservation of old photos http://elipinki.pl/2013/04/ratujmy-stare-fotografie/ At the very first photo here http://elipinki.pl/2012/07/przeszlosc-zamknieta-w-starych-fotografiach/ is the Wilczak family around 1935.

EDIT:
Some people from abroad contact with Mr. Popielarz on the site http://elipinki.pl/kategoria/historia/szukamy-korzeni/

O my God!
Thank you guys for your help!
See what I was saying about my name being butchered over the years?
I guess its not uncommon for us people with Polish last names!
Today its Vilchock!
Anyway this was all great info, you guys have really helped me tie some things together here.
Now how do I find out where John and Mary came from, like who there paretns were.
Ive got my Vilchock/Wilczak family tree mostly complete for the USA but that only goes back 110 years.
I'd like to know more about John and Mary so that I can advance the family tree some more!

Thanks,
I eagerly wait for help and responses

so they might be my blood relatives who stayed in Poland?
Wow truly amazing!
How do I know if there are any Wilczak's still there?
Hopefully they survived WW2
Is there any way to contact that region/town/village/municipality in Poland to get info or get in contact with relatives?
