I am only just starting to search for the Polish ancestors of my husband's grandfather, Michael Waclawek, and I am not quite sure where to start. He was was born 18 October 1886 in Broszkowice, a small Polish village not far from Oświęcim (Auschwitz), about 32 miles west of Krakow. In January 1907 Michał Wacławek traveled to the German port town of Hamburg and boarded the Graf Waldersee, a ship of the Hamburg-American Line. The ship departed on January 31 and sailed via Boulogne to New York where it arrived at Ellis Island on February 16, 1907. He was 20 years old and probably left his native country to avoid conscription in the Austro-Hungarian army? The manifest list of passengers of the Graf Waldersee lists West Hammond, on the south side of Chicago, as his final destination where he was to meet his brother (or brother-in-law) Jan Bizdacki [spelling unsure). The last bit is very hard to read so may not be accurate at all. He lived in West Hammond, better known as Calumet City, for the rest of his life.

Kristine,

There are two Boguszewo, in the same county, but Bronislawa mentioned Trzcianne.
Geneteka displays 108 Lewkowski born there, but there is no mention to Bronislawa or her mother Wiktorya.

Hi Gilberto, thank you so much for your reply. Can you tell me more about Geneteka? I am not familiar with this database. Bronislawa had two brothers who both emigrated to the US: Anton (perhaps also called Andrei) born in 1869 and Walter, born in 1885. Her father was name Frank.

Geneteka (main page in http://geneteka.genealodzy.pl/index.php?op=se&lang=pol) is an ongoing polish database. Many of the records were taken from indexes (churh books and civil records books) and some have a link to the original record (SKAN).

You can seach for a surname or for two surnames (marriages). You can narrow your search to a specific date (od roku > do roku) or to a specific province, if you have that information. You can mark the box Wyszkuwanie dokladne if you are pretty sure of the polish spelling. The icon 'i', in orange, stands for information, lets you parents' names or birth place (when provided).
