Post subject: name of the town -
This is an 1890 marriage record from St. Stanislaus Kostka church in Chicago. I read most of it, and Jan and Marjanna were both born in the same town. Could someone read the name of the town and indicate where it might be? I recognize "Duzym" but the next word "Androm....?"

Hi,
I think it is a declensioned form for Duza or Duze. There are lots of them, but I can't find any followed by Andromi??? It was certainly a place in Prussia (w Prusach).

Thank you for looking at the record. I thought at first that Duzym was used instead of Wielki but I haven't
found anything similar with Wielki either.

Very tricky.
While deciphering (two occurencies of the same name, it helps), it may lead to "Dużym Andromieżu", but that is a dead end, it does not exist, no variants either.
It is said to be in Prussia.
At some point I started to belive there is a typo in Chicago record, because the scribe did not understand the name.
The first record is: Jan Bąk, ... syn Jozefa i Katarzyny Szewc, urodzony in [crossed-out: Mendromierzu?] w Dużym Andromieżu, w Prusach
The second is: Marianna Zmich, ... corka Hermana i Marjanny Kuchembeck, urodzona w Dużym Andromieżu
The crossed-out name is Mędromierz, the village name Wielki Mędromierz, in German Groß Mangelmühle

Googling with Wielki Mędromierz and Zmich led me to a cache (no more existing) of a French record:
Marianna Żmich est né(e) le 15 août 1778 dans Groß Mangelmühle (Wielki Mędromierz Bei Jeleńcz), Provinz Westpreußen, Königreich Preußen, fille de Jan ...
A German database with Wielki Mędromierz and Zmich have plenty of entries:

Googling with Groß Mangelmühle Kuchenbeck Żmich led me here:

Altogether, I am quite sure the place is Wielki Mędromierz.
Wielki and Duży are synonimes.
The spelling of "Andromież" and "Mędromierz" differs only on the first nasal syllabe: "ą" vs "mę", even Polish ears may get confused.
And it was Prussia.

Wow! Thank you Elzbieta! That's fantastic! Now I've found it on the map!
Family History Library has films for Jelencz that include Wielki Miedromierz. They don't have 1860 records for John and Marjanna, but it looks like the records might include their 1830's-40's parents! I hope.
