Hello Gregg,

I also have possible family connections to Odrowaz. Shellie was able to find the marriage of my great grandparents in Odrowaz in 1877. They were married in Odrowaz but may have lived in Morawczyna which is a few miles east of Odrowaz.

I believe several family members may have moved to Chicago. Still trying to make connection to several people. My grandfather Vincent Habas(Chabas) I believe came to Pittsburgh first where he had a step brother Michal Trojan and then later moved to Erie, PA.

Can you look up several names in your copy of the census for me?
Chabas, Habas, Huzior, Stopka, Strama, Trojana

Also my grandmother on my mother's side was from the Czernikow, Plock area. Surname was Ciechacka.

Thanks,
Phil

Hi Phil,
I talked with UncleGregg a few days ago and he explained to me that he did not have the entire census, just the information for the Gall / Gal families.

I've attached a photo from my trip to Odrowaz in 2009.

This is a great site. I had not seen it before. Great pictures and information.

I am wondering if anyone can help me. I have great grand parents from the area. My great grandmother was Aniela Las born in 1867 in Odrowaz and died in 1950. She is buried in the church cemetery in Czarny Dunajec. She married Szezepan Figus from Czarny Dunajec. Szezepan died in 1920 in the great Influenza epidemic. He was being taken to the hospital in Nowi Targ and died on the way there.

So my question is, is there anyone in Czarny Dunajec or Odrowaz that can do some research on these individuals? Or can someone tell me how I can do this remotely. I greatly appreciate the advice.

thanks,

Rolfe Jaremus

Hi Rolfe, The story about Szezepan Figus dying on his way to the hospital in Nowy Targ sounds so familar. I am trying to recall where I heard a similar story! Can you tell us anything else - his parents names or sibling names?

In 1833, my ggg-grandfather Jozef Kulawiak (b. 1815 in Odrowaz) married Anna Figus (b. 1816) from Czarny Dunajec! Anna Figus was the daughter of Jakub Figus and Anna Szymala. I don't have any information further back for Jakub Figus or his wife Anna Szymala.

There are many Las families in Odrowaz. Do you know Aniela's parents names, or her siblings' names?

Hello Rolfe,

As far as someone to do research for you in Poland I would suggest contacting Zenon and inquire about his Relatives Search service.

Shellie,

Interesting in this small forum that we both have Figus relatives! With regards to Szezepan Figus, unfortunately I do not have any information about his parents or siblings. I have pretty good records of his children and into my direct lineage. One of his daughters was Anna Figus (popular name!) who was born in Czarny Dunajec January 21, 1893. She came to Chicago (Ellis Island arrival on May 24, 1911) care for and retrieve her ailing brother Karol, but ended up getting married and staying.

It looks like your Anna Figus was a generation or two ahead of my Szezepan. Would you possibly have information about Anna's siblings or decendents outside of your direct lineage?

Regarding Aniela Las, I do not have any other information about her. I went to Czarny Dunajec in 1991 and met her daughter Stefka, who at the time was 84. She told me where her mother was burried (CD cemetery) where I was able to see her burial site (rather elaborate). That was my only source. I would love to see some church records.

Thanks so much. Looks like I need to contact Zenon.

Hi Rolfe!
I have some birth information for Odrowaz, but nothing for Czarny Dunajec. I found a birth record for Aniela Franciszka Łaś, born 26 March 1868 in Odrowaz, house #5. Her father was Wincenty Łaś, son of Jan Las and Marianna Stanek. Her mother was Zofia Mis, daughter of Wincenty Mis and Rozalia (maybe Regina?) Glowicki.

There is also an entry for her brother Jakub, born in 26 May 1865, also in Odrowaz, house #5.

Unfortunately, without further information, we can't confirm that this is your Aniela Łaś.

Now, for my Anna Figus - all that I know is that my Anna Figus was the daughter of Jakub Figus and Anna Szymala from Czarny Dunajec. I have not located any further information about her siblings and I don't have I don't have any information further back for Jakub Figus or his wife Anna Szymala.

I do have another Figus. Agnieszka Figus, (I don't have a birthdate) daughter of Anna Fit and Michal Figus from Czarny Dunajec. Anna Figus was the wife of Jan Kulawiak. They lived in the same house where my Jozef Kulawiak was born (he was the one who married Anna Figus from Czarny Dunajec). The earliest birth record I have for their children is 1828 for their daughter Anna Kulawiak, born 16 Feb 1828.

I suggest that you also post a query on the Czarny Dunajec thread. You can go directly to the thread by clicking this link: http://forum.polishorigins.com/viewtopic.php?t=370
I can reply there also with some of my info. Perhaps someone will be attracted to that thread who has records from the church, or has information that includes your family.

Thanks for sharing your family history information with us. Every little bit helps and you never know when someone else will read this and provide us with something that may help us through our brick walls!

Shellie,

Wow that is great possible information about my great grand-mother. I am off by a year on her birth so I need to see if I can find out where I got the information. I have a picture of her grave stone, which I could possibly enlargen to see the dates better. Which I will do as time permits. Shellie, it sounds like you have some great information. Can you tell me the source?

I will also pursue the Czarny Dunajec thread.

Great information, thanks,

Hi Rolfe,
The information came directly from the church book when I visited Poland. I hope this turns out to be your great-grandmother!

I've attached another photo from my trip to Odrowaz.

Yes Darleen, the pictures posted in this thread as well as a few in the blog here: http://blog.polishorigins.com/category/shellies-tour/ show the church in Odrowaz, near Czarny Dunajec. Together wich Shellie, on her Forefathers Traces Tour, we had chance to visit it and even participate in holy masses, including funeral. Click here: http://blog.polishorigins.com/2009/07/14/14-shellies-tour-to-ancestral-places-day4/ to see interiors of the Odrowaz church.

Darleen, Do you know whether your g-grandfather Jacob Kalec was born in Odrowaz, or just baptized there? I have some birth records, but none of them are of the surname Kalec.

The only Kalec's I had were Anna Kalec, who was married to Jan Sral. Anna and Jan had a son named Pawel Sral who was married to Józefa Stopka. Pawel and Józefa had the following children:
Jozef, born 1903 (died 1904)
Stanisław, born 1904 - he later married Anna Gal in 1928
Franciszek Andrzej, born 1906 (died 1909)

The other Kalec that I have is Katarzyna Kalec, who was married to Jan Kocańda. Their son Stanisław Kocańda was married to Anna Tatar. Stanislaw and Anna had :
1. Jan Kocańda, born 1899 (he married Maria Iwan from Pieniążkowice in 1929; he died 28th Jan 1978)
2. Anna Kocańda, born 1901 (she died Nov 1971)

There were a few Łopata's mentioned, but no births.
Łopata, Anna (daughter of Wojciech Łopata and Anna Jasień) wife Andrzej Łaś (son of Tomasz Łaś and Ewa Gunka) gave birth to daughter Marianna Łaś on Feb 8, 1880.

Anna Łopata Łaś and Andrzej Łaś also had:
Filomena Łaś who had a child Aniela (father unknown) on Feb 18, 1897
Antoni Łaś, who was married to Filomena Cholewa and had a daughter Marianna on April 18, 1898 who died the same day. Antoni and Filomena also had a son, Stanislaw on Jan 23, 1900 who died a few days later.

There are several Komperda and some Jasień births, but nothing that matches your information. I also do not have birth records for the year 1869. If I did not include a birth date above, it is because I did not have the information in my notes. I hope that this helps you.

Wow! UncleGregg has 1881 census info for all Gals in Odrowaz! I had to register.

My grandfather's sister Agata Babczakiewicz of Now Targ married a Walenty Gal in 1901 in Buda Pest. They had no children, she died in 1919 and he died in 1950 apparently with no known living relatives, according to the family providing the personal information on his death certificate.

On his declaration of intention for citizenship from 1938, Walenty says he was born Feb. 17, 1876 in Odrowaz, Galicia, Poland. His death certificate says his father was Joseph and mother was Mary. I'm a little skeptical about the accuracy of these names since I know for a fact that Agata's parent's names were Joseph and Mary (I saw Agata's baptismal records in 2009), but stranger things have happened.

Would UncleGregg be willing to look for these names on his 1881 census list? Walenty would have been about 5 years old in 1881.

Thanks. PolishLibrarian

Hi Polish Librarian,
I looked at the information that I have but my records have a gap between 1875 and 1880. I looked for Walenty Gal for other years in case you have an incorrect birthdate, but I there was nothing. I also looked for births where the father was Jozef Gal. There were several, but none of them had a wife named Mary.

Where did Walenty live in the US? Did he have any siblings? If you can identify a sibling, maybe we can find them in my list. If he had a social security number, you might find his parents' names on the application - but I think the cost is rather expensive - $28!!

I'm sorry I could not be of more help. Uncle Gregg shared his copy of the census with me but I've misplaced it! Try sending him a private message - he might not read the forum often enough to see your message. If I find my copy, I'll contact you.
Best Regards, Shellie
