I live in the U.S. and i've been doing research on my genealogy for a while. My great great grandmother's last name was Butaleski and she lived in Michigan. However, at first glance researching this name I have found no corresponding ones that match up anywhere which leads me to believe that her name was changed (knowingly or not) arriving here from Poland. Can anyone give me some insight on this name? Thanks for your time.

Hi Shilshohm,

Where did you get the spelling of the surname Butaleski Question If you have any records where the surname is written down upload it here and we will try together to look at it and may be give you some hints.

There is no one living person in Poland bearing Butaleski surname and it is hard to guess from what original surname can it derives.

Hi Zenon thanks for the reply. The only place I ever found a record of her was from my great grandfather's obituary. His father's name was Joseph (koss) and mother was Julia Butaleski. Thats the exact spelling I found on the newspaper.

The only simirarly sounding surname that comes to my mind now is "Butlewski".

There are about 250 people bearing such surname living in Poland, the most of them in Włocławek area. Click here for maps of Butlewski deployment in Poland: https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/Butlewski .

And some information found through our Polish Genealogy Databases tool: http://polishorigins.com/databases/index?s=butlewski (you can try also this 17 matches found on Ancestry.com. Maybe this give you some hints or directions...)

But remember, this is only my wild guess Exclamation
