Hi all,

My third great grandfather, Abraham Munn born circa 1846, and his brothers, Cohen and Solomon Munn were all born in Poland and were Jewish. They escaped to England to avoid being called up to the military. The problem not only for me but my whole extended family is having is finding any information about where they were born and their parents. Munn is apparently a Scottish name and its thought one of them decided to live in Poland (maybe due to trade along the Baltic coast). On Abraham's marriage certificate his father is listed as John Munn however Cohen's has it listed as Samuel. There is no mention of who their mother is, who I'm certain is Jewish/Eastern European and the link.

There are no Polish records for them on Ancestry, Familysearch, JewishGen or Geneteka Genealodzy. Its like they never existed.

My theory is:
1. Somehow any records of them were destroyed in war/conflicts OR
2. They went by a different surname in Poland.

If anyone has any thoughts on this matter or wants do to some searching it would be greatly appreciated Smile

Hi jtoml3,

considering all the researches i've done for my family, in my opinion... They went by a different surname in Poland.
Because even some docs were destroyed, you should find somehow other documentation about other relatives or references...

Moreover, I were once researching about the history of foreigner families in Poland, and I discovered this book:
link here: http://goo.gl/ni75nd - go to page 67: Scoti, Cives Cracoviensis maybe it could give you some clues and ideas.

The other possibility is that the surname was misspelled. But the more documents you find the more certainties you'll have.

You should find other jewish families with the same surname collect as much material as possible.
Take a look at the GENI.com genealogical website, there are 2194 entries with surname Munn.
However the surname Munn is certainly of Scottish/British origin. http://goo.gl/x94Tcr
