Hi all,

can anyone help decipher the name on one of my father's documents?

This is pretty much the only clue I have to the village or area he came from in eastern Poland.

What I read in the stamp on the page is Gminy Berezowska or something very similar to that.

Can anyone confirm this and/or point me to exactly where this location would have been before 1939.

Thanks for any help.

Regards, Ted

Sorry, I should add that I have searched at http://www.kami.net.pl/kresy/ and found 21 possible places with the root name of Berezow but none seem to be for the Gmina here, and that has left me more confused than before.

Ted,

Gmina Berezowska in 1937 in your document. The word "gmina" (administrative unit) translates into community, it's offten a cluster of villages.
Polish language have declensions, "gmina" is Nominative form, "gminy" is Genitive.
cf. http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deklinacja_%28j%C4%99zykoznawstwo%29

http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gmina_Berez%C3%B3w

No English version, alas. Gmina Berezowska existed in Poland until 1939.
In 1921 Gmina Berezowska became part of voievodship poleski.

Today the former gmina spans over the border of Belarus and Ukraina, the village Berezów itself is in Ukraina, less than 3 km / 2 miles from the border.

Today:
Berezów (obwód rówieński)
Berezów (Ukr. Березове) - a village in region Rokitno (Рокитне), circuit Równe (Рівне / Rivne), in Volyn, today Ukraina.
http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berez%C3%B3w_%28obw%C3%B3d_r%C3%B3wie%C5%84ski%29

Berezów
Berezove, Rivnens'ka oblast, Ukraina

The etymology of "bereza" in Ukrainian, "brzoza" in Polish, is birch-tree, there is a lot of places with similar name.

Best,
Elzbieta

Elzbieta

thank you so much. This is the location I originally thought was the correct place.

Now I shall try to map all the places in Gmina Berezow.

Best wishes,

Ted
