Hello everyone, I am new to the forum but have been researching for some time now. This seems like a wonderful gathering place for people who really want to break through difficult family research problems. I recently had a massive breakthrough thanks to the scans from the Mlawa archives that are housed on the Poczekalnia.Geneteka site (not sure how to insert Polish characters yet using my new tablet--sorry about that). What an incredible resource. I found a record that I really do think is my ancestor's, and it identifies her birthplace as Lidzbark. I'm assuming it's Lidzbark Welski for now, as that is much closer to the family activities around Szrensk. So of course I go breathlessly over to the Lidzbark scans to find that they are civil registers going back to 1874, but not earlier. She was born in approximately 1864. So close and yet so far.

The short of it is, then: does anyone know how to find hard copy records, films, or scans for Lidzbark, pre-1874? I didn't see any films listed for Lidzbark/Lautenberg at LDS, but I did see a reference to older films or scans at one of the Jewish Heritage research sites. I'll try writing them as well. It says they come from state archives, but I don't know where. My ancestors were Catholic so I'm interested in both civil and parish books.

Warm regards,
Tonya

Hi Tonya,

Family Search (LDS) has the films for Lidzbark Welski under a different name:

Poland, Olsztyn, Lidzbark (Działdowo) - Church records ( 3 )
Kirchenbuch, 1785-1928
Author: Evangelische Kirche Lautenburg (Kr. Strasburg)
Add
Kopie księg metrykalnych, 1809-1812
Author: Kościół rzymsko-katolicki. Parafja Lidzbark (Działdowo)
Add
Księgi metrykalne, 1774-1890
Author: Kościół rzymsko-katolicki. Parafja Lidzbark (Działdowo)
Add

You will find the years you need in the following film:

Akta urodzeń, małżeństw 1856-1874
Family History Library
International Film
527776

Hope this helps,
Cynthia

Cynthia, thanks to your help I was able to order and review the Lidzbark Welski (Lautenberg) records (and also to get the hang of the search window--I can't believe I missed that one). Anyway, the mystery continues, as despite a marriage record in Szrensk saying my ancestor was born in Lidzbark, there is no trace of her or her parents there. Could be Lidzbark Warminski, but that is so far away from their home region around Mława. Also, darn those folks in old Lidzbark who did not believe in making annual, handwritten indexes! Anyway, thanks again!
