Post subject: Researching Piechowicz and Bak surnames
I am at a brick wall with my GGGrandfather, Lukasz Piechowicz, and his wife, Katrina (Catherine) Bak.
He was born in 1871, and immigrated in 1904 to the USA. On US census records it just says he is from Ropa, Poland. Katrina was born in 1884, and immigrated in 1906 with a 4 month infant son. The ship manifest has them both with the last name Bak. She, too, has Ropa, Poland as birth place. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Ropa appears to have been a large area and I have no village name information.

Here is a link from my family ancestral parish, near Ropa. There are Bak family members listed in this parish as well as many other names of researchers I have seen on this website. I hope this helps you.

The record found in www.stevemorse.org shows a Katha Piechowicz and her son Jan arriving in 1905, not 1906. And her husband was Karol, not Lukasz. There is another arrival for Katarzyna Piechowicz in 1909, but the link is broken.

Ropa is a village north to Gorlice, with a very old church

I did see the ship manifests. I wonder if "Bak" was a married name prior to her marrying Piechowicz. She was going to Dillonvale, Ohio which is where they lived for a while. It was big coal mining region. That would have had to be her and Jan. (Jan was killed at the age of 16 in the Benwood Mining Explosion in 1924; it was 2 weeks after his father, Lukasz died)

If I write or email the parish, does it need to be in Polish? I do have birth dates from their death certificates.

If you write simple sentences, and your request is clearly stated, then, even if they do not speak English, they will be able to use Google translate, and understand you. In my opinion that is the best choice, because you are autonomous.
Just small observation: write your dates dd month (in letters) yyyy, this way it will be clear. Or use Polish/German system dd.mm.yyyy.
If at any moment you need my help in Polish, just ask.
