Elzbieta,

In your reply to me on May 27, 2015, you told me about a scan that you found that might be my ancestor Antonina Malewska, and now I have located the scan of it actually in Cetlin village in Bonislaw parish. It is birth record #63, scan 21 on Geneteka. I would very much appreciate a word-for-word translation of this document.

Marilyn

Hi Elzbieta,

'Continuing to read all that I can find online about 16th to 20thc. funerals in Poland. I could make little sense of this paragraph using google. This reference is circa 1880s-

Especially interesting- there seems to be a sort of prayer for forgiveness that an elder relative said during the ceremony.

When time permits....

Ciało wyprowadzają czasami drugiego dnia, a nawet i pierwszego do kościoła; bogatszych stawiają na kościele (w środku kościoła. przed przybytkiem v. presbyterium), uboższych w kruchcie.

Appreciated,
Nancy

Nancy,

Translated :

The body is sometimes moved to the church on the second day, and even the first; richers are put in the church (in the middle of the church. before the tabernacle v. presbyterate), poorer in the porch (kruchta translates to porch, but: kruchta = kind of annex to the church, https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kruchta). The next day the funeral is held. The coffin is closed at the lid. Those walking past at wayside figures or the cross behind the village, stop by and open the lid. Then one of the older relatives, in the name of the deceased, apologizes present, with these or similar words: "This soul asks you, so you forgive her all the bad she could do to you, all faults and wrongs you could experience from her, do you forgive her? do you forget that to her? - And the presents say and answer one after another: We do not remember in which she acted badly on us, we do not have any malice againt her; and then this one and that one speaks: let her sleep in peace with God! - let her rest in peacy forever! – let her see the brightness of God! etc. After that, they close the lid and carry the body to the cemetery. Over the grave they are singing devotional songs with intention for deads. The priest usually accompagnies the body to the wayside figure, and sometimes to the cemetery.

NOTE: I have no idea how to translate “seplenić”, google says “lisp”. It is a way of speaking when you pronounce slightly differently, like a kid not knowing yet how to do it well, or, in French, someone with “cheveu sur la langue”, litteraly “hair on the tongue”. The lisp manifests in Polish with not pronouncing all “cz” or “sz”, like in the above text “dusa” should be dusza = soul, “przebacacie” should be przebaczacie=forgive.
NOT2: dusza is feminine in Polish, therefore she/her.

Zack,

Very interesting marriage record from Drohobycz.

The death record of KROCHMAL Hencze was already translated a couple of days ago. See:

The birth record of Marcus KROCHMAL is in German, unfortunately I do not speak German.
I can only guess the date of birth – 18 January 1879, in Boryslaw, record 400, and the date of circumcision – 25 January 1879, in Boryslaw, record 400.
