Hello all,

My researcher Czeslaw sent me this email today containing the information on records he found for me. My question is as this is writen is it month first or date first. Is the custom in Poland date first? Here it is below:

Witam,
szlachcic Józef Fronckiewicz zmarł 9.03.1872 r. we wsi Dobrawola mając lat 54, zostawił żonę Mariannę Rogowicz, zostawił dzieci: Rafała, Romualda, Scholastykę, Weronikę, Józefę. Pochowany w Starych Trokach.

Weronika Fronckiewicz urodziła się 3.02.1862 roku. Rodzice Józef Fronckiewicz i Marianna Rogowicz.

Pozdrawiam,
Czesław

Thanks to those who can help.

Hugh,

On the Polish records I have seen it is the Day, the Month and then the Year.

I concur.

On all present Polish records the method is dd.mm.yyyy, with dot as separator, now often yyyy-mm-dd as it became the international universal format, with straightforward sorting method, implemented as native on all Unix computers, databases, etc. The method dd.mm.yyyy is also in use in Germany.

The old Polish records, the ones we have seen here on PO, have "dd (name of month) year", or sometimes "year yyyy, month name-of-month, day number-of-day", an universal in advance method in Poland.

The only country I know about with mm/dd/yyyy is the USA.

BTW, I spotted on 1 or 2 letters from Polish Archives to PO members from the USA, using mm/dd/yyyy, that that date was misinterpreted by Poles, inverting dd and mm when both numbers are 1 to 12.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Date_format_by_country

Best,
Elzbieta

NB.
Very much correlated with the date format exception is the usage of metric system, where the USA are the only ones

See the cost due to the use of non standard units

I do remember Mars Orbiter, as my labs have been involved in.

One more detail about the Polish use of day.month.year is that sometimes the month is represented with Roman numerals. For example, Christmas Eve would be 24.XII.2014r.

Best,
