Post subject: Podczerwone near Nowy Targ - Southern Poland [Podhale]

Podczerwone is a village in southwestern Poland, near Nowy Targ. The village is very close to the Slovakia border.
The name Podczerwone translates into the English word Infared.

Podczerwone [pɔtt͡ʂɛrˈvɔnɛ] is a village in the administrative district ofGmina Czarny Dunajec, within Nowy Targ County, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, in southern Poland, close to the border with Slovakia. It lies approximately 17 kilometres (11 mi) southwest of Nowy Targ and 74 km (46 mi) south of the regional capital Kraków.
The village of Podczerwone was founded by Szymon Czerwinski under the Royal Decree of Sigismund III Vasa in 1604 giving the property privileges in Western Tatra Mountains and Czarny Dunajec river valley. The privileges included the Dolina Lejowa, Polana Bialy Potok, Hawrylówka, Roztoki, Polynica, the forests of Furtaska, Kryta and Krzyskówka. During Poland's Partition Period (123 years) the region remained under Austrian jurisdiction and the town and its privileges were sold in Vienna to land investors.
Presently the village counts about 640 residences. A significant number of them emigrated to the USA and Canada. They became strong contributing members of new North American communities and also active members of the Polish Highlanders Alliance of North America (Związek Podhalan w Ameryce Północnej) in Chicago and Toronto.

Hi Shellie, great material!! As discussed my maternal grandmother was born in Podczerwone in 1890. Her name was Agnes Leja. Her father was Jakub Leja. I believe they may have even used a hyphen name such as "Leja-Koruniarz" .
I have herad my mother mention her Cousin Stella Duda had a maiden name of Bryja. Anyone with Leja background or from the village I'd be interested in any info you have.

Hii! Shellie, My paternal grandmother was from Podczerwone. Her name was Anna Dluga. She was born in 1885. She immigrated to America and arrived at Ellis Island, New York, USA on 2-4-1905. She then went to Glalltzin, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. She married Jozef Szczelina and raised a large family in the nearby small town of McCoy, Pa. before later moving to Parma Ohio to live with her son Joseph A. Selena (name changed in WW2). My son Charles Kovach and his polish born wife Dagma Musial were in Poland in June 2014 to see her family in Sosnowiec, Which is just above Katowice. They were in Zakopane also. which is a very beautiful and popular mountain resort region in the area. Podcerwone is about half way between Katowice and Zakopane. This was my son's second visit to Poland. His first eas in 2004 or 2006. I have just found out about my grandmother being from Podczerwone! Anyone with a Dluga background in the village of Podcerwone I would like to hear from you>

Hi Rosanne! Wow I love how posting these village threads brings people together!!!! Although I don't have a direct connection of Podczerwone (that I know of yet LOL) I am glad to see that new people are finding this spot and are posting information. Rosanne, may I ask if you know...is Dluga definitely your grandmother's name or do you know if it was shortened from something like Duglapolska? Welcome new friend to this group where I am sure you will make even more new friends!!

Yes! I do believe that is my paternal grandmother Anna Dluga who arrived in 1905 at 18 yrs old......
