Post subject: Michajlyszyn, Michalyszyn, Michallyszyn
My cousin and I are trying to solve a family surname mystery. We have an ancestor named Theodor Michelson who died around 1919 and we have little to no information about him except that his surname was spelled Michalyszyn on some marriage and birth documents. I've had little success finding a surname spelled Michalyszyn, but I did find Michallyszyn and also Michajlyszyn. My gut tells me that the original name was Michajlyszyn.
We have no idea when he came to the US, but he married my ancestor Mary Rebizant in Broughton, PA around 1912 and he looks young in the wedding photo (maybe less than 24 years old). Mary Rebizant was from Huta Rozaniecka in Eastern Poland, and the family considered themselves to be more Ukrainian than Polish and attended the Greek Orthodox church.
Is anyone familiar with this surname?

Shellie, I have free access to the Hamburg Passenger Lists at the moment and checked for your name. I found a Teodor Michaliszyn leaving Hamburg on Feb 4, 1906 on board of Graf Waldersee. The ship manifest lists his age as 27 years (b. abt. 1878), he is single, his occupation is farm laborer and day laborer, his last residence was Koninchy. He is accompanied by Hryhoryi Perec, 23 years old (b. abt. 1882) also from Koninchy, and Maryanna Kopec, 22 years old (b. abt. 1883). Her last residence was Huta. All three are citizens of Austria.

According to Ellis Island, Teodor arrived in New York on Feb 18, 1905 on board of Graf Waldersee sailing from Hamburg. His name is misspelled Miholyszin, Teodor, his ethnicity is Ruthenian, hes an Austrian citizen, his destination is Scranton, PA, where hes going to join a friend. Hribon Psrec from Koninchy who accompanied him is also going to Scranton, PA where hes going to join a cousin. His ethnicity is also Ruthenian, and hes a citizen of Austria. Maryanna (spelled Marjanna) Kopec is going to Passaic, NJ, where shes going to join a cousin. Her ethnicity is Polish, Austrian citizen.
I found a Mary Michalczyd in the United States Census 1920, living in Westmooreland, PA. She was 45 years old and widowed with 6 children between 3 and 16 years. Could this be the Theodor and his family youre looking for?

Hi Ute!
I don't think we have the correct Mary - she only had 3 children by 1920 and she was remarried by then. But those are good hints. I'll follow-up on them and see what happens. Thank you so much for helping me!

Hi Shellie,
It sounds definitely more Ukrainian than Polish and I think you are right that the surname would be spelled in Polish Michajłyszyn. In Ukrainian it will be Михайлишин .
Maybe this will be of a little help in your further quest on this one lineage of your big Polish and Ukrainian family .
