Post subject: Where was Lukowi?
I saw my grandmother and uncle coming to the USA in 1921 when I checked the Ellis Island site. It said their last place of residence was Lukowi. I know names changed many times in Poland but no matter how much I search online, Lukowi does not come up. Does anyone know if there ever was a Lukowi somewhere in Poland and if so, where? I'm thinking maybe it was misspelled on the passenger list. I have a copy of my uncles birth certificate but it is very hard to make out. All I can see clearly is the Gmina, whatever that means. It looks like it says Zalesie. However, my uncle was born in 1908 so he and my grandmother may not have lived in Lukowi, than. The Ellis Island passenger list only says it was their last place of residence, not where they were born. Still, I'd like to know where Lukowi was. I have no idea where they were born, but I think my grandfather was born in Warsaw. Maybe Warsaw is a clue. He came to the USA before they did. They were married in Poland but he left before them and my poor grandmother and uncle got stuck there in Poland for longer than expected because of WWI.

Sabina,
If you want us to be able to help you please attach scan or picture of the birth certificate of your uncles and any other documents where the searched places are recorded.

Sabina,
You may try googling "Lukowi, Poland". It came up with some info, including that there is a "Lukow" in the County of Lubelskie in Eastern Poland. It had a population of 30,727 in 2005.
I always google first and usually come up with some defination or explanation to lead me elsewhere!
Good Luck,
MaryAnne

I hope I can find where they came from in Poland. It is the only document I have.
