I've sent along a copy of my grandfather's Declaration of Intention with his town listed. Is this in the area south of Rzeszow? Is it the town of Markuszka? Thank you for any help.

It sure looks like Markuszka. I couldn't quite read your grandfather's full name... is it Bartholomu Bae? Do you have any other documents for your grandfather? Did he stay in New York state?

Looks like Markurska to me. Looked in the area of Rzeszow and did not find a town by that name. Markowa is as close as I could find. It's to the East of Rzeszow.

My grandfather's name was Bal. His first name changed from document to document, depending on who interpreted what he was saying, but is always a form of Bartholemew. I totally understand that the town is spelled by the way it was understood by the person who filled out the document. I saw Markowa and Mrukowa and Markuszka from an old map. He does not state what town he came from on his Ellis Island document - only Galacia. He does state his mother's maiden name as Osiek which could be where she came from, and his wife came from Zmigrod (possibly he knew her from the area church or felt comfortable marrying someone from a town near where he lived). Thank you for your input in my discoveries. Once I know where to go, I intend to visit the area.

I came up with this map showing villages during an older period. Thanks for your maps and input. I figure I must get in touch with the diocese to get more info.
