My grandfather's American WWI draft card states very clearly that he was born in "Stevist Yedwabney Gub. Russia." I suspect that this is Jedwabne, and "Gub." is simply an abbreviation for Gubernia. But what does "Stevist" mean? I cannot seem to find this anywhere and would appreciate any input at all. Thanks!

Hi,
I guess it is the misspelling for Stawiski, 10 miles NW of Jedwabne.
