Can anyone help? I have been unable to locate my Grandfather's name on Ellis Island or Ancestry.com for his immigration to America. In 1910, 1920, 1930 he was living in Cleveland Ohio and married my Grandmother Murwaska in 1916. I have uploaded his naturlization record I obtain through Chicago. Could his name have been differant than Krukowski? Any ideas of how I can locate these records?
Thank you

Hi!

Maybe the person who transcribed the information from the ship manifest had trouble reading your grandfather's name and spelled it differently.

Since you already have a ship name and arrival date (Kaiserin Auguste Victoria arriving in NY 26 June 1909), have you tried browsing the entire list of passengers for this ship on ancestry.com? If not, try the link below - there are over 180 images, including the list of detained aliens at the end.

I found only two Klukowski brothers traveling to the US on board of the SS Kaiserin Auguste Victoria that arrived in NY on June 26, 1909: Stanislaw Klukowski, 32, married, farm laborer, Russia/Polish, last residence with wife Alexandra in 'Ianopole', Russia; and Albin Klukowski, 35, married, farm laborer, Russia/Polish, last residence with wife Klementyna in 'Gadacze', Russia. Their destination in the US was Marquette, Michigan. However, they were deported (see attachments). I don't have access to the list of deported passengers to find out if they were admitted later. I couldn't find any other passenger on board of this ship whose name COULD have been Krukowski, but was misspelled.

I have a family member whose naturalization papers show a wrong date for her immigration. Based on that, I would suggest you to check all Jan Krukowski arriving in NY. There are 12 entries, according to what I have found in www.stevemorse.org Gold Form. At least one was born in 1884, but none arrived in 1909.

I found him in the 1910 census in Cleveland, Ohio. What is the chance he came over on a differant ship? Place of residence states Brzenzo. On his Marriage record it states he was born April 17, 1888 all of his other records state 1884. His parents were Joseh & Maria and states he was Bapitized in Waszewo. Is Brzenzo and Waszewo in the same area and in 1884-1909 was it part of Russia and if it was what was the area called in Russia. My Grandmother Victoria parent's Leon and Antonina came from Wizajue. I beleive is close to Biastoke. I have searched for three years on and off and I always come up blank for my Grandfather Krukowski.

For three years my goal has to been find my Grandfather's information and then travel to Poland on a Forefathers Tour. Fall of 2012 is when I would like to do a tour but I still can not locate information on my Grandfather and family. I had found about 25 letters written in old polish and had them translated to English. My ancestry journey began after reading these letters...I realized this was my family who had suffered so much. I have traced my grandmother side Murwaska to my great great great grandmother. But my Grandfather I have come up empty in Poland.
Any ideas of my next step.
Thank you

I have received your letter on December 2nd so I am now answering you to your greeting “Now and For Ever, Amen” [, quotation marks by me, this is as a response to a Christian salutation (greeting) “Praised be Jesus Christ”(response) “Now and for ever. Amen.”].

This letter was a great joy for me that you have not forgotten about me and this is the first letter from my family, as I don’t have a single sign of life from my parents, brothers and sisters, because they are closed behind the Russian border. Maybe you my dear sister know something about them? Because I, since 2 years, know nothing, although I suppose they are alive.

I, together with my whole family we have survived this horrible storm of war, a storm that crossed our beloved homeland three times. Even thought we have survived, in sadness and unimaginable poverty that was only waiting to take our lives.

My oldest children were sent as forced laborers losing their health in coldness, hungriness and maltreated by Germans, you know yourself what a Pole had suffered under the German occupation. But all this is gone; we have somewhat more freedom these days.

During that time, while the last German-Russian front was going through our land we lost everything. We had to hide in ditches and bunkers, ducking from bullets and bombs. I lost your address at that time and I could not give you any sign of my survival and survival of your family. This was horrible time of robbery; we had only one cow, one sheep and a couple of chickens left. Now the Great Lord blessed us and we have earned some more wealth, we live somewhat better. My two youngest children go to school, which they did not have for 5 years, so they are uneducated, the other two finished public school yet before the war, but for now they work on a farm.

So this way I have shortly described you our recent war history, on the next opportunity I will write more, much more. Now I would like to learn about your life during this war, because I don’t know how you up there experienced [the war] how is your family, whether you are all together or not, if you went through some circumstances or you had some other situations in your family [I think she just does not want to openly ask if they are all alive] and how is your health, because I am in a bad health condition according to a doctor I have a weakness of vein blood [direct translation, I don’t know what condition she is talking about but I assume this is low blood pressure] I don’t know how I will get better.

So I am sending you my best regards, together with my husband and children, and I am awaiting your response.

Your sister Stefania…

Brzenzo is misspelled = Brzezno (36 places with the same name).
Wizajue = Wizajny
Murwaska = Murawska
Waszewo = not found. Just a guess: if it is Woluszewo, in kujawsko-pomorske province, it is surrounded by three vilages named Brzezno. That was "Russia-Poland" by then.

I beleive the area is Wàsewo Masovian Voivdeship Ostro Mazowiecka County Masovian. I tried another search and Brzeżno and Wasewo were located within the map in this area. In the early 1900 was this a part of Russia? Thanks for your help. I still can not find the boat he came over on.

Here is a map with the location of these places.
Wasewo is in gmina Wasewo, and Brzezno is in gmina Goworowo;
Wasewo is in powiat ostrowski, and Brzezno is in powiat ostrolecki;
Both are in mazowieckie province. It was Congress of Poland by then (Russia-Poland).

http://geneteka.genealodzy.pl/index.php?op=se has some records for the Krukowski families in Wasewo. However, it does not cover (so far) the frame of time Jan was born, neither his parents' marriage. No transcribed records for Brzezno. Check it regularly.

How wonderful for you to have so many letters from your ancestors in Poland. Those kinds of letters are so important and give us a tiny glimpse of what our ancestors suffered through during WWII. So many of us can only guess what life was like for our families during that time. Thank you for sharing one of your letters with us. If you are willing to share more letters, we would certainly all be interested!

Can you post an image of your grandfather's census records? There may be some clues in the records that some Polish Origins members might be able to use to help you and get you closer to confirming your grandfather's birthplace before your Forefather's Traces Tour. Wow! 2012 is coming up fast! You must be getting excited about your trip!!!

Hi Shellie,

Yes I know. If I do not have more information before I take my trip, I am sure my trip will lead me into the past. I believe my grandfather changed his name from Kruk to Krukowski after arriving in the USA. I am still searching for a lead on this. My aunt is 80% sure he changed his name when he was married as my grandmother did not like the name Kruk. I have attached his Naturlization records. Maybe someone will be able to provide me with some clues to my questions. I had 7 more letters to translate and should have them complete by the first of the year. I had the other translated 3 years and finally completing the last 7. When I am complete I will put them in order by the dates.
