Hi, Michael.

I don't need a full translation of these two birth records. I'm just looking to see if these are the birth records of the twins born to Mathias Schalkenbach and Catharina Steinbach in December of 1851. What exact date is listed? Also, what are the twins names and is there anything unusual/interesting in the handwritten portion of the entries?

Mathias is my third great grandfather and I'm trying to figure out why it seems like only one of the twins came with them to America in 1854.

THANK YOU!
Jaime

Hi Jaime,

These are the birth records of the twins born to Mathias Schalkenbach and his wife: record no. 951 is for Amelia, born on 27 December 1851, record no. 952 is for Maria, born on 28 December 1851.

According to the data provided here Catharina was already 25 years old and her maiden name was Steinbach, in the census a year later she was 24 and her maiden name was Scheid. Maria’s name is provided as A[nna] Maria in the census.

My personal opinion is the birth records are a more reliable source as you find often such misspellings in census data. Neither on the birth records nor in the census data there is a hint that one of the twins might have died early.

Michael

Thanks, Michael. I was tempted to draw the same conclusions given the nature of census taking and all the shorthand. And the fact that every other doc I have has her name as Steinbach and not Scheid.
