Hello, I'm hoping someone can help me find my great-grandmother's birth place so I can search for birth records. This info comes from her US alien registration but the English spelling must be pretty far off because Google isn't turning up anything. I'm also not very familiar with the country boundaries in the early 1900s, so I'm not even sure if I should be searching Polish, Lithuanian, or Russian archives. This is exactly how the place is written on the document I have:

I was born in or near:
City: Kapaczy
Province: Wilno
Country: Poland, Russia
I am a citizen or subject of: Poland

If it's helpful, she was born in 1900 and arrived in the US in 1923.
Thanks!

Hi,
Do you have a ship's manifest or other document that you can share with us?
What is your great grandmother's name?
Regards,
-Barb

Hi Barb, thanks for the reply! Her maiden name was Stanislawa Konon or Konowska, her married surname was Grzyb. Her US marriage certificate lists her parents names as Vincent Konowska and Helena Taniuk. I'm attaching the ship manifest (she is row 2), the alien registration form, and marriage certificate. I also want to look into her husband, but I don't have enough supporting documents yet to know where to start. Thanks for any help you can provide!

Hi,
In Stanislawa's (Stella's) manifest, I can read that her last place of residence was Kibarty in Lithuania. I found a town with that name. See map.
Kibarty (lit. Kybartai) is a city in Marijampolė County, Lithuania. It is located 20 km west of Vilkaviškis and is on the border of Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia.
Not sure if that's the place you're looking for.
I didn't find any place called Kapaczy, or anything similar.

Regards,
-Barb

The Geographical Dictionary of the Kingdom of Poland provides information about the village In the Wilno area: Kapacze.
Here is an excerpt.
Maybe this will be a clue.
This is one of the villages that are part of the Syczynięta rural district.

Hello,
Houston, we have a problem Smile
There are 300 km between the two places. Were there other family members who came to the US earlier or later?

Hello,
here are some records that I think relate to Stanislawa's brother, Michael

marriage https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2489-5NC (parents: Vincent & Helen)

1930 census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XQTW-52C (Sterling, Worcester, Massachusetts; cousin: Frank Konan)

possible Frank's passenger list https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JJKB-GY4 (from "Smorgon", his father was Stanisław Konan from, "Kopaczi", Wilno). I haven't found Michael's passenger list.

Smorgonie and Kopacze are now in Belarus, 25 km apart, close to Syczynięta mentioned by Marcel https://www.kami.net.pl/kresy/ Kopacze belonged to parish Żodziszki

Hi,
Thank you Monika and Marcel. We can disregard the last place of residence stated in the Manifest. I will see if I can find any documents for the parish of Żodziszki.

Can you suggest where to look for Parrish records? I tried Familysearch but most of the records I see are from the Krakow area. I should be searching for Żodziszki, not Kopacze, right? You have all made more progress for me in one day than I've made in weeks!

Hi,
Unfortunately, I find nothing directly related to the parish of Żodziszki. Monika, do you see something? Then it is best to contact the archive in Grodno.

Barb, I found this but it ends in 1879 https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/835272?availability=Family%20History%20Library

I've just received the alien registration for Stanislaw, Stanislawa's husband, (apologies, I'm perhaps overly excited!) His record says he's from "Saczynietz, Wilno, Poland." Should I assume this is the the Syczynięta rural district that was mentioned above?
