I am searching for the children born to Jozef Gruszka and Karolina Sledzinska and have found two entries on Geneteka - extracts below.

The links are: https://archium.tsdial.archives.gov.ua/file-viewer/230251#file-811980 and http://agadd2.home.net.pl/metrykalia/301/sygn.%201868/pages/1_301_0_0_1868_0306.htm

I initially thought that I had found a marriage entry for Edward in 1919 and that the scribe had simply made an error with the surname, showing Kustanowicz instead of Gruszka. But now that I've found a second similar entry for the marriage of Maria I'm uncertain if either of these are correct but as I'm struggling to read all of the text I can't work it out and would like some help to understand.

Would someone be able to take a look at these two entries for the marriage of Maria in 1907 whose parents are shown to be Jozef Kustanowicz and Karolina Gruszka also that for the marriage in 1919 of Edward Kustanowicz with parents Jozef and Karolina Gruszka to see if these could be the family I'm researching.

Many thanks, Jillian

Hi Jillian,

The 1907 record is for the marriage of Maria Kustanowicz, daughter of Jozef Kustanowicz and Karolina Gruszka, just as the Geneteka indexer has written it.

The 1919 record is for the birth of Edward Jozef Kustanowicz, the son of Jozef Kustanowicz and Karolina Gruszka, again agreeing with how it is indexed on Geneteka.

Were you expecting to find children named Maria and Edward? Or did you know that your Jozef and Karolina were from this particular church and you were looking for any and all children?

I am going to make a guess here, that when you look at the results table in Geneteka and you see "Jozef, Karolina Gruszka" that you are interpreting that as Jozef Gruszka and Karolina Gruszka. That would not be correct. It means that it is Jozef, whose surname matches the name of the child (or bride) as already given (in your two examples, that would mean his name is Jozef Kustanowicz) plus the mother of the child (or bride) is Karolina whose maiden name was Gruszka. Does this help?

Hello Sophia,
I had a feeling that this was going to be the case! Yes, I am seeking an Edward Gruszka born between 1880 & 1898-ish - so the time frame and the area are feasible - just the wrong parents.

Many thanks for your time an help - much appreciated.

Hi Jillian & Sophia,
What do you know about Edward Gruszka? Do you have anything to share with us?

Hello to Sophia and Barb,

I am actually researching the families of two ancestors who lived in Rohatyn circa 1800 onwards - but maybe earlier; their surnames are Bandynda and Danyluk. Having looked through all the available records on FS, AGAD, Geneteka and Szukaj w Archiwach, I believe that they originally followed the Greek Catholic faith but unfortunately I cannot locate any records going back to 1800. I have contacted Archives in both Poland and Ukraine and they all say simply that they do not hold any records so I don't know if perhaps the registers are still being held in the individual churches or maybe they just haven't survived.

I've looked at various trees which have appeared online in the past and it seems that the Gruszka family from Rohatyn are connected to one of my families although nothing is clear and I so thought that maybe if I followed the Gruszka line back I might hit my family - somewhere.

The earliest data I know is that Katarzyna Danyluk was born in Rohatyn circa 1821 and that she was the daughter of Jan Danyluk and Anna Bandynda. Records from the 1830's show many members from both families living in the area but I cannot find a way to join the dots and go back to Katarzyna's birth.

Any ideas or suggestions which I could try would really be appreciated.

Jillian

PS I wasn't sure whether to change the subject heading so left it alone.

Hi Jillian,

Perhaps that is the answer, then, that the records for the time period that you need are simply not available. You are moving back in years toward the early part of the First Partition (which I'm sure you know was in 1772). If it interests you, here is one interesting historical timeline, albeit with an emphasis on how it affected the Jewish population, but it does have several points that apply to everyone:

https://rohatynjewishheritage.org/en/history/timeline-early-years/

And here is a resource that you may be able to access from your library, that appears to discuss what happened to the records from before the First Partition:

https://www.jstor.org/stable/4208539

I wish I had another avenue to offer you so that you could complete your task of joining the dots.

Best regards,
Sophia

Hello Sophia,

Thank you very much for these two links I shall try and see if my local library offers access to the second one. I would just like to know for certain if the early records are out there somewhere - or not.

Many thanks for your time.
